Cook Grabs LebanonMidway Factory Special
by: Ronnie Williams
Lebanon, Mo. (April 22, 2006) - The Lebanon Midway Speedway host the 1st annual
Fast Factory 50 this weekend with 50 Factory teams competing to grab the $5,000
to win show and when the dust cleared it was veteran Rolla driver Todd Cook
grabbing the top prize money after grabbing the lead from pole setter Tony
Jackson Jr and holding off a late charge from Richie Tosh in claiming the
victory despite earlier rain that covered the track earlier in the evening.
As the field of 26 came down for the green, pole setter Jackson Jr grabbed the
top spot and begin to pull away from outside front row starter Matt Collins. The
FactoryStocks showed the crowd all weekend long some great side by side racing
and Sat night's 50 lapper was no exception as David Hendrix and Robbie Bryant
were wheel to wheel for 3rd place.
The 1st caution waved on lap 5 as Brad Friedmeyer made contact with the turn 2
wall sending him to the pits for repairs. On the restart,Jackson again powered to
the front as Todd Cook was moving from his 8th starting spot to over take Bryant
and then Hendrix into 3rd place.Ealry contender and 2005 Batesville champion
Tommy New pulled out with problems ending his night.
After a couple of cautions for sheetmetal,Jackson would find his lead getting
smaller as Cook began a charge on the outside groove and closed-up the gap
around lap 19.On lap 21,Cook went to the front after a side-by-side battle with
Jackson to take control as Hendrix started his move to the front moving into 2nd
place.Top 10 runner Tony Anglin went by the wayside on lap 22 as Hendrix was
gaining ground on the leader Cook when his transmission failed ending his night
up in turn 4.Back in the pack, last chance winner Tim Brown last season's
dominator had worked into the top 5 after starting 18th and Bob Gustin was
working into the top 10 after starting 19th.On the restart,Cook maintained a 5
car length lead when Arkansas top runner Richie Tosh began to gain ground within
the top 5.
The caution waved again around lap 28 for sheetmetal as Chuck Pederson headed to
the pits with a flat tire after running in the top 6 and returned at the rear of
the field. With Cook in control,Jackson and Tosh began a great battle for 2nd as
Tosh made the move and gave chase to leader Cook.
On lap 32,the 8th yellow waved as Curt Turpin's night ended after breaking an
axel in turn 2.Officials were beginning to wonder about fuel after 8 cautions
and red flagged it for fuel only. With 16 cars on the lead lap tire wear was now
on the drivers minds as Cook brought the field down to the green with Tosh on
his bumper and Jackson and Brown battling for 3rd place while Modified standout
Eric Turner had moved from 15th to the top 5.The race now developed a long green
run as Tosh and Jackson had caught Cook and the battle was on as Brown made it a
4 car chase.
Cook had moved to the low side away from his high groove running as Tosh tried
several laps on the bottom to pass as Jackson was going upstairs.A final yellow
waved on lap 41 for sheetmetal as ook, Tosh, Jackson, Brown, Turner, Collins,
Bryant, Claudie Cook, and Bob Gustin were battling for spots. On the restart,Tosh
looked inside of Cook while Brown and Jackson were gaining on the leaders and
battling for position also.Eric Turner and Collins were having there race for
the top 5.
With Tosh applying pressure,Cook used his asphalt experience in keeping the car
straight and smooth. With 2 to go,Tosh again tried down low with Cook running the
middle groove, then protecting the bottom while Jackson and Brown were wheel to
wheel. As the white flew,Coook pulled ahead by 2 cars and held off the last turn
rush by Tosh in grabbing the win.
Tosh,Jackson,brown,and Turner completed the top 5,with Collins,Bryant,Claudie
Cook.Gustin, and Pederson completing the top 10 with 13 drivers completing all 50
laps.
"During the fuel stop,we discovered a shock was twisted on the rear",quoted
winner Cook."If wew would have tried to fix it,we would have gone to the rear,so
I moved my line down as to try and help the situation."
"Last season we ran part-time at Midway and won a couple of extra paying
features helping me gain ground on this season. This is our 1st race this year
and it's a wonderful way to start my season."
In support Action On Sat Night,Chris Carlson made the haul down from Wisconsin
worth his wild as he made a clean sweep of the Fastrak Mid-West Regional
LateModel feature. After a good opening battle with Kevin Poole,Carlson was
flawless in the 25 lap feature event in leading all 25 laps with Shelby
Thacker,Steve Beach,Poole and Jared Harris rounding out the top 5.
In Friday Night support action Ben Newell and Donnie Gennings battled wheel to
wheel until Gennings looped it in turn 4 giving Newell the lead and the victory
as Gennings came charging back to grab 2nd place with Bill Joiner,Travis
Hill, and Robbie Simmons completing the top 5.
Shawn Winfrey made the most of the extra paying event as he grabbed the lead
from early pacesetter Aaron york and withstood a late charge from Mike Piercey
in grabbing his second win of the season and also taking over the point lead as
Piercey,York,Jay Flinn, and Brian Warner completed the top 5 over a 23 car field.
Regular points action on Friday night as all 6 classes will be back in action
with Gates opening at 5 and Racing at 8PM.
