Moffitt Sets New Track Record and Wins His First Asphalt Feature at I-70 Speedway by: Chuck Stowe ANKENY, IA (May 3) - Forty Laps of Late Model
action saw yet another young gun from the state of Iowa take his first ever
checkered flag on the famed I-70 Speedway high banks. 15 year old Brett
Moffitt from Grimes, Iowa piloting the 5K Motorsports prepared, Karl
Chevrolet crate engine powered, late model would set quick time for the
night. That time would also turn out to be a new track record on the
American Racer I-70 track tires. Due to the fact that it was his first trip
ever to I-70, Moffitt would have to line up tailback for the 40 lap late
model Feature. At the drop of the green, Mike Vannoy Jr. jumped into the
lead as Moffitt and another young gun, Thor Anderson battled behind him. Lap
3 saw an early yellow flag, as Billy Crane, Ron Hartford, Thor Anderson and
Moffitt raced nearly 4 wide and ended up spinning down the front stretch.
After the restart and from the rear of the field, Hartford and Vannoy Jr.
raced bumper to bumper with Moffitt in tow. By lap 13, Moffitt had worked
his way to the third spot. At midway, Hartford and Vannoy Jr. touched
causing another spin resulting in them both restarting from the rear. On lap
34, Moffitt saved a totally sideways race car coming out of turn 4 and it
would seem that he would have his first feature win at I-70 wrapped up.
However, a lap 39 spin would bring out one last caution, setting up a
green-white-checkered race finish. In the end, the Iowa youngster held off
I-70 veteran Ronnie “the Raytown Rocket” Hartford for his first ever win at
I-70 Speedway. Vannoy Jr. was third, Caleb Hall was fourth and Elton Rust
finished in the fifth spot. Young guns, Moffitt and Vannoy Jr. were fast
qualifiers with Vannoy Jr. timing in at 17.53 and Moffitt setting the new
Late Model track record with his qualifying lap of 17.22 seconds. |
