Jim Fulp takes win at Monett Speedway
by: Karen Fulp

MONETT, MO. (May 18) - The Race Brothers Show-Me Racin Series took to the Grand Ole’ Lady of Monett Speedway on Friday May 15. Twenty nine Late Models arrived ready to battle for the win. In the end, Jim Fulp would come away with the top spot, making three different winners in three Show-Me events for 2009.

Jim Fulp took the win in heat race #1, Shane Essary in heat #2, Rex Merritt in heat #3, and Ken Essary in Heat #4. The top 16 in passing points from the heats qualify for the A, which left 13 cars to battle through the B’s for their transfer spot to the A. Adam Brown & Chris Deaton finished 1st and 2nd in B feature number one. Rick Lebow and Shannon Phillips picked up the transfer spots in B feature number two. Roger Wilson and Mark Penticuff received the points provisional starting positions.

With rains moving into the area track owner, Randy Mooneyham, did a great job of keeping the show moving along and getting the races in before everyone got soaked. 22 cars hit the track for the start on the Late Model A feature. Jordan Holloway would set the pace, with Jarrod Hilton to his outside. Holloway would jump out to the lead when the green flag dropped, with Fulp quickly taking 2nd from Hilton by lap 2. Fulp made the pass for the lead by lap 4, and would be able to hold on until the end, although a couple of late cautions would bunch the field up and make him work for it.

The first caution came out on lap 17 when Bill McMurtrie went over the end. Leslie Essary had made it up to 2nd by this time, and 3rd place runner Jordan Holloway had trouble during this caution and pulled off the track. When the green flew for the restart another quick caution came out as Roger Wilson, Adam Brown, Larry Campbell and Chris Morelock piled up in turn 3. Ken Essary left the action for a flat tire and restarted in the rear. On the restart, with Fulp in the lead, Leslie Essary in 2nd, and 10th place starter Justin Wells in 3rd, the battle was on for between Essary and Wells for 2nd. Wells would pull off the pass on lap 20, although Essary was not willing to easily give it up, as the 2 battled side-by-side for several laps. In the end, Fulp would hang on for the win, followed by Wells, Leslie Essary, Shane Essary, and Jarrod Hilton would round out the top 5. Kevin Henson had a good run coming from his 11th starting position to finish 6th, Rookie of the Year contender Phil Edmondson in 7th, Rex Merritt 8th, B feature qualifier Chris Deaton in 9th, and Jordan Holloway was able to make it back up to 10th after being forced to the pits during the caution period and restarting tailback.

The Race Brothers Show-Me Racin Series was scheduled to race at Nevada on Sat. May 16, but the rain and cool weather forced the cancellation of this event. It will be rescheduled later in the season. The series will have a couple of weeks off and will get back in action for a very busy June starting at Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, OK on June 6th. Lucas Oil Speedway and Springfield Raceway will both be holding weekly events this Saturday May 23th, for those who want to get out and race over the Memorial Day weekend. Also, a big event is in the area as the West Plains Motor Speedway will hold its 17th annual Show-Me 100 $40,000 to win Super Late Model event, and Monett Speedway will hold its Tony Roper Memorial on Sunday May 24th.
