Maggard Headlines SpringfieldRaceway USRA Mod Main
by: Ronnie Williams

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (June 13) - On only his third night out with a new car, Former Springfield Raceway Modified champion Erik Maggard grabbed the lead on lap 7 and never looked back in grabbing his first feature win of the season in the USRA Modified feature Sat night at the Quick-Quarter despite an incident in the qualifying heat race.

The Modified feature rolled out with Arkansas driver Todd Knight grabbing the early lead with Darrell McWhirter following closely along with Bobby Pearish and Brian Green.Pearish moved into the runner-up spot on lap 2 and was running down the leader Knight as Maggard was starting his charge from the 6th starting spot.Pearish's strong run would end in turn 3 on the 6th lap as he spun.On the restart,Knight stayed to the middle lane while Maggard moved to the high groove and made the pass in turn 4 to take control as Green,Mitch Keeter, last weeks winner Jody Tillman,Steve Muilenburg and Jim Body were battling for position. On lap 13,point leader Jackie Dalton spun to the infield area and lost a couple of laps taking him out of contention while Maggard was sailing on the top groove.Opening up a big lead over the pack,Maggard would take his first season win as the pack for second finally found Green grabbing the runner-up spot followed byMitch Keeter,Jody tillman and Muilenburg completing the top 5.

"The new car has been fast since we brought it out 3 weeks ago"quoted Maggard."We had a second, and a third place finish while leading some laps and lost in the closing laps, tonight even after the deal in the heat race,it was perfect come feature time."

The SportMod feature had a rough start, but the last half of the feature provided tight and close racing action.

Jimmy VanZandt would lead the opening lap,but a wild crash would end the night of Chuck Bryant,Dallas Scott,Darian Hendrix and Billy Dalton. On the restart,Jerry Lankton would set the pace, but an incident on a lap 3 restart with Mike Hailman ended his night early with VanZandt again taking control with Mike Watson and Andrew Smith following closely.Point leader Billy Street would started the night 12th,patiently worked his way to the front along with JC Morton and took over the lead on lap 9 while Sean Williams was recovering from an early spin was working the bottom groove to contend with the front runners.During the long green run in the last half,Williams went to the bottom and Street stayed-up high as the duo raced cleanly for the lead with Williams taking over on lap 18.A lap 19 caution gave Strret a last shot at the win,but Williams would hold of the charge to grab his first win of the season with Street,Morton,Steve Muilenburg and early leader VanZandt completing the top 5.

The Legends provided four wide racing action all night long as second generation driver Trevor Drake grabbed the opening lead with Paul Horton ,Tony Jensen and Caleb Copher in tow.Points runner-up david Bauer had worked up to challange on lap 5 while young Drake was setting a fast pace.A lap caution allowed Bauer to close-up the gap as Dave Comer was battling also.Bauer took the lead the following lap as Drake would ;ater pull-in with problems.Up front a 4 car battle found point leader Park Jones moving up to join the race along with Justin Comer.Bauer would withstand the charges and grab his 3rd win of the season followed by Dave Comer,Jones,Justin Comer and Rob Watson.

The Bomber feature had Dan Wood lead the opening two laps with points runner-up Robert High taking over on lap 3.High would then fight off repeated challanges from Shawn Strong to capture his second victory of the season with Strong, point leader James Redus,Jack Hamer and Mike Willoughby following.

The LateModel feature found JP Compton lead the opening 4 laps and then Adam Brown moved to the top groove and would grab his first win of the season with Compton,Glen Yarbrough,Alan Jones and Wesley Briggs following.Track point leader Jeremy Manes would be caught in a lap 3 incident ending his night early.
