by: Ronnie Williams
LEBANON, MO. (June 27) - The only thing hotter than the weather was the
racing action Friday Night at the Midway Speedway as 5 new winners in the
2009 racing season grabbed victories.
In the Action packed FactoryStock feature paying $500 to win,Derek Brown set
a quick pace from his pole position with points runner-up Ben Solberg on his
outside with Brown leading the pack as Solberg, point leader Bob
Gustin,Donnie Gennings and Chip Shaddux following. The first of several
yellows flew on lap 4 as Shaddux got against the backstretch wall asending
him to the rear.On the restart,Chris Darnell who started 9th moving up to
fifth place spun in turn 1 collecting up Tommy Lewis and Tyson Troutman. With
Brown holding off repeated challanges from Solberg, new faces were coming to
the front quickly as James Flood,Dylan Keepper, defending champion Tim Petty
and Donnie Miller were moving up in the standings. The feature seemed to be
marred with several yellows as the time limit on the feature was drawing
closer that on the yellow on lap 8,the field was told 2 laps to go in the
event. On the restart,Solberg shot to the inside of Brown's car,but Derek got
a strong bite out of turn 2 while drivers were swapping spots and still
moving forward. As the checkered flew,Brown would grab his first win of the
season and becoming the 4th different winner in FactoryStocks this season
with Solberg hanging on to the runner-up spot followed by Gustin,Gennings
and Dylan Keepper.
The Bombers provided the best feature of the evening setting the standards
for the rest of the events.Kolt Barker grabbed the early lead with Jeff
Brown following closely.Rodney Yost who started sixth on the grid moved
around Brandon Waters to take over third place and began his move
forward.Caution flew on lap 4 as Brian Warner came to a halt with a flat
tire.On the restart Barker was setting a quick pace as runner-up Brown spun
on lap 5 bunching up the field. On the restart,Yost started to apply pressure
as Matt Pilant and point leader Joe Francis and last weeks winner Shawn
Strong moved into the standings.Yost began to apply pressure to the leader
Barker and on lap 11 took over the lead as Strong who was going for three in
arow moved up to challange. On the final lap Strong set his sights on Yost
and began to pull even with the leader as Yost was staying smooth in the
middle groove.Heading out of turn 4,Strong moved to the top side and pulled
even, but Yost got the better grip out of the turn to grab his first ever win
with Strong,Waters, early leader Barker and JR Aitken completing the top 5.
The B-Mods had a rough start to the feature as the field bunched-up in turn
1 sending Tyler Brown,Rob White and Josh Woody to the rear of the field. On
the restart,Brian Millsap grabbed the top spot early Points runner-up Jason
Otto made a charge around Mickey Burrell to grab the early lead as several
yellows caused the feature to go to the time limit.A five car battle up
front with Otto and Burrell along with point leader Jeff albright Jr,JC
Morotn and Brian Webster. In the closing laps,Otto hold hold on to record his
second win of the season with Burrell a solid second followed by Morton who
charged from the 8th starting spot,Albright and Webster completing the top 5
as 15 of the 19 starters were on the lead lap.
Another new first time winner was crowned in the Non-Winged Sprint feature
as Lebanon driver Scotty Wedelstadt grabbed the lead on the opening lap and
held off repeated charges from Steven Cross to capture the event. It was
Wedelstadt's first ever feature win in his SprintCar seasons.
The HillBilly Farm Truck again provided a first time winner as Matt Shriner
in only his second ever race grabbed the 4 wide start lead on the opening
lap and held off several attempts from Steve Steinmark in grabbing the
victory.Steinmark made several attempts in the late stages of the race but
got sideways in turn 1 allowing Shriner to pull away.Willie Payne and Tim
Early completed the field.
The Enduro feature provided plent of side by side racing as the 2-man Enduro
car of Tommy Lewis and steve Hixson grabbed the opening lead on the 4 wide
start with Matt Stephens close behind and last weeks purestock winner Danny
Caffey following. With the Lewis car setting a fast pace and Stephens right
beside him,Caffey began to close up the gap as Brian Schutt had problems and
lost a couple of laps early.Around the lap 20 mark,Caffey had caught the
lead duo and was closing to the top spot as Kris Jackson's strong run ended
early as he lost a tire ending his night setting on the backstretchwall. On
lap 25,Caffey moved around the leaders and pulled away to open up a 4 second
lead as the Lewis team settled in with Stephens still a solid third.early
contenders Joe Francis and Kolt Barker were setting a solid pace and
battling for position.Joe Hatfield had a big puff of smoke come from his car
and let water down on the track on lap 45 as Caffey was starting to slow
some.Lewis began there charge back to the front again by lap 55 took back
the lead as Caffey settled in to a solid pace.Stephens running third had
lost a lap to the leaders. On lap 60,The Lewis car again with 2 drivers was
starting to slow as Caffey was making up some ground.Caffey closed the gap
up to half a straight-away,but couldn't get any closer as Lewis grabbed his
