Payne Defends Kuntz Memorial In MARS Action At Springfield Raceway
by: Ronnie Williams
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (July 11) — Jeremy Payne overtook teammate and fellow
Springfield, Mo., driver Terry Phillips on the 16th lap and led the rest of
the way for his second straight victory in the Andy's Frozen Custard John
Kuntz Memorial at Springfield Raceway. Payne earned $2,500 for winning the
35-lap O'Reilly MARS DIRT car Series event honoring the late sponsor of the
Phillips-Payne team.
Close racing action in the middle stages of the feature saw a tight battle
between race winner Payne and Justin Wells.Wells had gathered to the top
groove of the Quick-Quarter dirt oval as Payne kept to the middle racing
lane. While gaining on the leader Phillips, contact was made twice between
Payne and Wells before Payne started his charge to the front-running
Phillips bringing the apacity crowd to their feet.
Phillips, who led the first 15 laps, faded to finish fifth in a race slowed
by three cautions for single-car incidents. Justin Wells of Aurora, Mo.,
finished second followed by Eric Turner of Springfield and Brandon McCormick
of Lebanon, Mo.
In support action, current SportMod point leader Billy Street slowly made his
charge from the 12th starting spot and overtook leader Billy Dalton on lap 6
of the 15 lap feature. The feature marred by early cautions and several
single car spins featured some great action after lap 8 till the
finish.Dalton recorded his best finish of the season with the runner-up spot
after a hard fought battle with John Yeoman Jr as Roy Maynard and JC Morton
completed the top 5.
The Legends feature provided plenty of 3 wide racing as Jay Reynolds grabbed
the opening lead for 2 laps only to spin in turn 2.Justin Comer then took
his turn in the top spot while Jason Rayle was challanging.David Bauer came
charging to the front on lap 9 and withstood a late race challange by by
Comer to capture his third win of the season with Comer,Rayle, early front
runner Paul Horton and point leader Park Jones completing the top 5.
Jeremy Teaver spoiled the Schudy family sweep in the Pro-4 division by
overtaking leader Kory Schudy on lap 8 with withstanding several challanges
by Kory and Kris Schudy in taking the victory.Kory Schudy,Kris Schudy,Pat
Schudy and Ben Seaton completed the top 5 as the feature provided excellent
racing.
