Justin Wells Wins Again
By: Clarissa Essary

MONETT, MO (July 27) - The Race Brothers Show-Me Racin’ Series was back in action close to home at the Grand Ole Lady of the Dirt Tracks, Monett Speedway. The night was filled full of great racing action. Twenty-six late models were in the pits all geared up to race for the top spot when the checkered flag flew at the end of the night. The grandstands were full of local race fans ready to watch the Show-Me boys put on an exciting show. It would be the 98 of Justin Wells who took the checkered flag winning his third in row.

Four heat races began the night for the late models. It was a close battle, but the 25x of Rex Merritt took the win in heat one followed by the 98 of Justin Wells. Heat two was another race to the checkered with Ken Essary in the 55 taking the win with Jordan Holloway in the 21 in second. Kevin Henson in the 15 and Chris Deaton in the 1c finished first and second in heat three. The fourth and final Show-Me Racin’ Series heat race was won by the 00 of Jim Fulp with the 33 of Rick Lebow in the number two spot.

The top sixteen cars in passing points transferred from the heat races to the A Main. Ten cars were left to fight their way through the B Feature for the remaining four transfer positions. The 11 of Jarrod Hilton, 6 7/8 of Sundance Keeper, 8s of John Driskill, and 31 of Ron Johnson were the final four transfer positions into the A Main. The two point provisional transfer positions went to the F7 of Scott Fry and the 2p of Mark Penticuff.

Twenty two cars pulled out onto the track following the Cassville Country Dodge Chrysler and Jeep pace truck. After a parade lap to the fans, the 1c of Chris Deaton and 73 of Bill McMurtrie set the pace to the green from the front row. The green flag flew and it was the 73 of McMurtrie who jumped out to the lead. The 1c of Deaton and 21 of Holloway were in second and third. McMurtrie started to pull ahead, but Holloway was coming on strong. On lap seven, the 21 was challenging the 73 for first. Caution was brought out on lap eight for the 6 7/8 of Sundance Keeper. The 73 of McMurtrie was still in the lead but he now had the 21 of Holloway and the 25x of Rex Merritt right behind him. The 25x took the lead on lap eleven. Wells had made his way to the front and now was working to take the lead. The 98 passed Merritt on the high side coming out of turn four to take the lead. The 5 of Leslie Essary was battling for fourth with the 21. Wells was pulling away and had a straightway lead over the 25x of Merritt in second. Caution came out again on lap twenty-one for the 2a of Tim Adams and the 8s of John Driskill who went over the corner in turn three. On the restart, the 98 pulled away from the rest of the pack. The 25x and 5 were trying hard to catch Wells, but he had too big of a lead. The top five were; Justin Wells in the 98, Rex Merritt in the 25x, Leslie Essary in the 5, Ken Essary in the 55, and Bill McMurtrie in the 73.

Also, congratulations to Cole Wells, 13 year old son of Justin and Missy Wells for his win in the Rookie division at Monett on Sunday night. The Race Brothers Show-Me Racin’ Series will have a weekend off, but will be back in action at Nevada Raceway on August 8.
