SPRINGFIELD, IL (August 2) - Under a cool Aug night and an early morning
rain shower, the action at the Springfield Raceway lived up to the billing
as the Quick-Quarter with an excellent racing surface and side by side
action all night long.
The USRA Modified feature had pole setter Sam Petty lead the opening two
laps has Erik Maggard and Bobby Pearish were right along side of the
leader.Pearish who was using a 604 Crate motor this week untries was hanging
on strong. On lap 3,Maggard kept glued to the high side and took over the
lead with Pearish,Petty and a fast moving Jim Body following.Contact between
Petty and Body on lap 5 brought out the first yellow as both drivers went to
the rear.On the restart, current and defending champion Jackie Dalton and
Mitch Keeter were coming quickly from there 5th row starting spots and
applying pressure. The last 3 weeks it has been a Dalton and Maggard classic
battle and tonight was no exception.Dalton moved to his familiar low groove
with Maggard staying on the top side.On lap 9,Dalton made the move stick and
took over the lead as Keeter was following. The second yellow waved on lap 11
as Micheal Maggard spun in turn 2 bunching the field up.On the double file
restart,Keeter picked the high side with Dalton leading and Maggard a solid
third followed by Pearish and Todd Knight. On the restart,Keeter swung
upstairs with Dalton staying on the low-side as Dalton began to pull away
leaving Keeter and Maggard to battle for second place. The duo swapped the
runner-up spot 5 different times as Dalton grabbed his fourth win of the
season followed by Keeter,Maggard in a photo finish battle,Pearish and a
fast moving Todd Knight.
In LateModel action,Rick Lebow grabbed the early lead from his pole spot for
the opening 3 laps before the dirt hall of fame driver Ken Essary came
charging from the rear of the field to take charge on lap 7.After a strong
battle early in the caution free event,Essary pulled away to grab his first
SpringfieldRaceway victory of the season with Lebow,Adam Brown, point leader
Jeremy Manes and Sundance Keepper in a near photo finish battle for
position.
The SportMods picked-up where they left off the previous 3 weeks showing
just how competitive this class is.Billy Dalton brought the 20 car feature
to the green. The yellow waved quickly as Darrell Jackson spun collecting
Mike Hailman with him.On the restart,Dalton grabbed the lead again with john
Yeoman Jr following tightly.Battles were all over the track with 2-3 wide
racing as Willie Wilson and Colt Cheevers were making up ground quickly. The
Yellow waved on lap on lap 8 as Jackson who was trying to stay on the lead
lap spun in turn 2 collecting-up Yeoman, point leader Billy Street,Darian
Hendrix and Corey Pope.Only Street would return to action. On the restart
Dalton would find Colt Cheevers on his back bumper with Wilson and 12th
starting Jeff Albright Jr in the mix.Cheevers would take over the top spot
at the halway point as Albright and Dalton ran side by side for 2
laps.Cheevers started to pull away, but on lap 12,Albright moved into second
and applied pressure to Cheevers.Wih the lead duo battling,Wilson having his
best run of the season,Dalton,Midway point leader Mickey Burrell and Mike
Hailman were battling. The final yellow waved on lap 18 for Jason Wallace as
he retired from the race setting-up the 2 lap shootout. On the
restart,Albright picked the low groove and as the green waved moved to the
inside of Cheevers.Colt used the middle lane to hold off the challanges in
taking his first points race win of the season and becoming the 9th
different winner in 11 races.Albright followed very closely to grab second
followed by Wilson,Burrell and Hailman as 15 of the 20 starters finished on
the lead lap.
The Legends again provided close racing as Paul Horton jumped to the early
lead with Tyler Horton following closely. With 3 wide racing action all over
the oval,Dave Comer came charging to grab the lead on lap 6 and held off
repeated challanges from the Horton family to take the victory with Tyler
Horton following along with Paul Horton,Justin Comer and Kaleb Copher.A
rough night for several top point cars as Park Jones finished 14,Dave Bauer
ended on his top in an incident finishing 15th and Jason Rayle came home
with a 7th place finish.
The Bomber feature saw Mike willoughby grab the opening lead for three laps
until Shawn Strong made a nice move to get the top spot and never looked
back in grabbing the victory with points runner-up James Redus finishing in
the runner-up spot followed by early leader Willoughby,Bill Schoen and Jack
Hamer.
