Kris Jackson Tops 1st USRA Midway Mod Main-Piercey Returns In
Style Taking Bomber Feature
by: Ronnie Williams
LEBANON, MO (August 21) - Under a perfect evening and a lightning fast and
racy track action continued Friday night with 80 raceteams in the pits along
with 3 first time 2009 winners.
Lebanon's Kris Jackson has won in many different classes of racing at the
Midway, but Friday night in a dominating performance he captured his first
ever USRA A-Mod feature win.Starting the 15 lap event from the pole
spot,Jackson jumped to the early lead with Jim Pearcy Jr running beside him
on the top groove with point leader Donnie Fellers following along with
Danny Atkinson. As the race stayed green,Jackson would gather even more speed
as the car worked flawless pulling out to a big lead. The battle for second
became tight as on lap 8,Fellers made the move on Pearcy with Rusty Dukes
following behind him. With Jackson long gone,Dukes would apply pressure to
Fellers, but would come up short as Fellers hwld on to grab second with
Dukes,Pearcy Jr and Sam Petty completing the top 5.
The B-Mod feature provided lots of close racing as point leader Mickey
burrell grabbed the opening lead from the 19 car grid.Derek Brown was giving
chase along with Brian Webster and points runner-up Josh Woody. On lap
3,Woody moved into second place and gave chase to Burrell. The caution flew
on lap 4 for Brian Millsap as he spun challanging for a top 5 run.on the
restart,Colt Cheevers who started 12th on the grid moved into 4th place and
was coming quickly along with last weeks winner JC Morton. On lap 7,Cheevers
moved into second place and began his charge on the leader Burrell leaving
Woody,Brown and Webster to battle.Following a lap 9 caution,Cheevers made
the pass for the lead on lap 10 as Brown and Woody were swapping spots. After
starting the race 19th,Tony Jackson Jr was coming on the top groove and saw
his number move into a top 5 spot on lap 13 as Webster spun and Morton's
strong run ended with clutch problems. On the restart,Cheevers bobbled out of
turn 2 and Burrell stuck his nose under the leader as they raced side by
side.Cheevers would be able to withstand several challanges from both
Burrell and Derek Brown to take his 4th win of the Midway season with Brown
moving into second place followed by Woody,Burrell and Jackson Jr.
The FactoryStock feature had point leader Bob Gustin grab the opening lead
with defending champion Tim Petty right on his bumper. As Gustin started to
open up the lead,Petty found Tyson Troutman and Sundance Keepper
following.Keepper moved around Petty on lap 6 to grab second place and began
a charge on Gustin.Gustin made a bobble in turn 2 the next lap and Keepper
took advantage and moved into the lead. The lead duo ran door to door for 3
lap as Petty and Troutman began their charge back to the front as previous
winner James Flood was coming quickly to the front pack.Keepper had opened
up a 6 car lead until lap 13 when Gustin closed-up the gap as Petty began
going backwards with a flat right rear tire. The final 2 laps Gustin closed
in,but Keepper hung on to his third win of the season with
Gustin,Troutman,Donnie Miller and Flood in the top 5.
The Bomber feature had Brandon Waters and former champion Mike Piercy go
side by side on the start.Piercy who was making his first race of this
season would just nip Waters at the line as the lead duo went side by side
until lap 3 when Waters bobbled just a bit letting Piercy pull away.Matt
Pilant then moved into second place as last weeks winner Shawn Strong was
moving forward. The only caution rolled out on lap 11 for Tim Bostwick as the
field bunched-up with Piercy getting a good jump with Pilant,Waters and
Strong battling.Sundance Keepper made a late race surge into the top 5 as
Waters began to go backwards in the field. At the checkered,Piercy showed the
crowd he hasn't forgotten how to get around the Midway taking his first win
of the season with Pilant holding off Strong to grab second place as
Strong,Keepper and point leader Joe Francis completed the top 5.
The PureStock feature also saw a new winner as Jason Brumley jumped out to
the early lead over point leader Les Hayes.Points runner-up Adam Lowrance
had a rough night as problems sent him out on lap 1.On the restart,Brumley
again jumped to the lead with Tom Monnahan moving to the top groove and
coming quickly. The battle up front kept everyone close with Brumley driving
the race of his carrer with standing monnahan's challanges as Hayes and Joey
Long battled. The race with Long ended on lap 6 as the axel broke ending his
night.Up front Brumley and Monnahan dueled until lap 11 as on the final lap
Monnahan slowed with problems leaving Brumley to his first win of the season
followed by Hayes,Robert Doublin,John McGinnis and Monnahan.
Racing continues Friday night Aug 28 as the FactoryStocks race for a $500 to
win points show along with B-Mods,Bombers, and the LateModelSportsman.Enduro
racing also is slated with the Cars and Hillbilly Farm Trucks.Racing will
start at 8PM sharp.
