by: Ronnie Williams

SPRINGFIELD, MO (August 22) - Under perfect racing weather and a perfect racing surface action provided the fans at SpringfieldRaceway some close racing action.

The USRA modified feature rolled out with Tammy Mitchell bringing the field down to the green with Brian Green to the outside.Green would lead lap 1,but the yellow flew quickly as Mitchell and Todd Knight got together. On the restart Green again jumped to the lead with Jody Tillman and Bobby Pearish following. As the pace started to pick-up,Pearish drove to the front on lap 6 taking over the top spot as Brandon Maggard making his first start of the season in Larry Tindle's car was charging from the 11th starting spot and moving into the top 3.Maggard wheeled the car into second place on lap 7 and for the next 4 laps it was side by side action with Pearish and Maggard.Behind the lead duo was side by side racing with Tillman, early leader Green,Mitch Keeter and a fast moving Joe Duvall along with Ted VanZandt. On lap 12,Maggard started pulling away and would capture his first USRA feature win with Pearish a solid second followed by Jody Tillman,Mitch Keeter and Joe Duvall making his first start at the quick-quarter from the 12th spot.

The SportMods had extra money to win as 32 cars went to qualify for 20 spots.Current point leader Billy Street and 3rd place point driver Roy Maynard brought the field down to the green with Street grabbing the opening lead.Behind the lead dup was a tight pack including Gary Rodocker,Dallas Scott,Andy Beauchamp and Eric Tinderholt. With Street using the middle groove,Maynard in his 602 Crate motor took the high lane as they stayed close. The 1st caution waved on lap 6 for Mike Watson as he had a tire go down.On the restart,Street and Maynard pulled away again with Beauchamp holding off a fast moving Mickey Burrell and JC Morton.During the long green run,Street pulled away from Maynard and grabbed his second win of the season with aphoto finish for the runner-up spot as Burrell nipped Maynard for the spot with Morton and Mike Hailman following as 18 of the 20 starters finished on the lead lap.

The Bombers provided another excellent finish as John Coates grabbed the opening lead from his front row starting spot. With Coates setting a quick pace, back row starters Shawn Strong,Mike Hailman and points runner-up Robert high were coming to the front.A scary incident on lap 8 when Mike Willoughby spun in turn 2 and Leonard Huse hit him hard in the frontend. Both drivers walked away unhurt. On the restart,Strong was applying pressure to Coates as Hailman and Dan Wood along with high were battling.Strong kept applying pressure to Coates and on lap 13,the winning move happened in turn 2 as Strong shot to the inside to grab the victory with Coates held of High for the runner-up spot followed by Hailman and Wood.

The Legends provided three wide racing almost all night.Bill Cottrell jumped to the opening lead with Gary Hockman following.Caution waved as Billy Cottrell,Jay Reynolds got together. On the restart,Bill Cottrell would find Rob Watson,Tony Jenson, and point leader Jason Rayle challanging.Watson took over the top spot on lap 5 as Dave Comer started making his charge to the front pack.Watson,Rayle and Comer were treating the fans to 3 wide racing with Watson just holding to the lead.On lap 18,Comer went to the outside groove and grabbed the lead as Watson and Rayle battled.Comer would take the victory with Watson,Rayle,Kaleb Copher and a fast moving Tyler horton in the top 5.

The LateModel feature went caution free as Larry Campbell took the lead on the opening lap with Jim Fulp in tow.Campbell was pulling away but Justin Wells was moving from his 9th starting spot. With Campbell starting to get into lapped traffic,Wells powered through to catch the leader on lap 8.Going into turn 3 Wells shot to the outside lane and pulled off a 3-wide pass to grab the lead and never looked back.Campbell would hang on to finish second with Fulp,Sindance Keepper and Phil Edmundson following.

The Pro-4's made an apperance and it was a all Schudy family event as Pat Schudy and Kory Schudy battled early with Pat pulling away on lap 6 to grab the win.Kory Schudy,Kris Schudy,Dustin Bass and Aaron Cornell followed.
