Shepard drives new ride to victory at I-35 Speedway
By: Phillip Wilson
WINSTON, MO (August 22) - 95 cars checked in for night number 14 at I-35
Speedway. With more excitement than ever it was bound to be a great night of
racing. With only 5 nights remaining in the 2009 season, some of the points
races are shaping up to be right down to the last race.
The Grand National feature as always was first on the track. For the first 5
laps the lead would be traded back and forth between Jason Anderson and
Jimmy Winkler. Anderson would find the line he needed to win his 2nd feature
of 2009. Winkler who is still searching for his first Grand National win at
I-35 this season would hold on to 2nd. Brad Whitney drove the Lakeside
Speedway/I-35 Speedway border war car to a 3rd place finish, Chad Clancy was
eligible for the border war cash if he won finished 4th and Mike Jones was
5th. Clancy did pick up the hard charger award.
29 IMCA Sport Mods were on hand tonight. Dustin Miller and Mark Hunzinger
had the front row and Hunziger would lead the first 5-6 laps before Blake
Peeler found the high side and drove to the front. Peeler would battle Jeff
Stotts for the remainder of the race. Peeler worked his way around Stotts
and would cash in on feature win number 3. Jeff Stotts held on for 2nd. Jon
Boller Jr. who has been a big help this season to the Northwest Missouri
Championship would finish 3rd. A returning Chris Wright was 4th and
Hunzinger would come home 5th. Peeler and John Fugett both gained 8 spots
but Peeler will take the hard charger because of his higher finish.
During intermission we found out that tonight may be the last race for
Matthew Lance driver of the 92.7 IMCA Hobby Stock. After the feature tonight
he may rethink that. Weeks after a violent roll Lance claimed his first
career feature win at I-35 Speedway. Lance held off 8 time feature winner
Eric Stanton for the final 2 laps. Stanton would hold on to 2nd. 3 time
feature winner Cody Cleghorn was 3rd, Greg Kuehn was 4th and Chad Shaw
driving Alexis Whitneys x9a car finished 5th. Eric Stanton gained 7 spots to
win the hard charger.
Thomas Roberts found himself in unfamiliar ground at this point of the
season. 13 races into the season he was still searching for his first win of
2009. Night number 14 proved to be his night. A 4 car battle ensued in front
of Roberts as Bennie Turner, Brad Whitney, Kevin Anderson and Jeff Dixon all
battled Roberts layed back and waited for someone to make a mistake. Finally
Roberts found his line as he finally found victory lane this season. Roberts
edged out Bennie Tuner who finished 2nd, Kevin Anderson was 3rd, Jeff Dixon
4th and Gene Stigall rallied to a 5th place finish. Roberts doubled up on
trophies as he took home the hard charger award.
Yancy Shephard returned to I-35 Speedway this week in a car he purchased off
John O’Neal and Shephard drove it like he has been in it all season.
Shephard started inside row 6 and would take the car to the front and claim
win number 2 on the season. Jim Peeler would finish 2nd, Mark Dotson driving
Steven Glenns new car finished 3rd, Zach Sanders was 4th and Rick Spriggs
5th. Dotson gained 14 spots to win the hard charger award.
5 nights left of the 2009 season. Some points battles have yet to be
decided. Next week is Coke night at I-35 Speedway home of the IMCA’s best
and the Grand National division. Check out our new website at
