Asher and Shields among I-35 winners
By: Phillip Wilson
WINSTON MO. (August 28) - Saturday night was Trenton Coke night at I-35
Speedway and the fans were treated to a great show. 2 weeks before IMCA's
biggest show of the year the drivers heading there are trying to tune their
cars up and work out any bugs they have.
13 Grand Nationals were on hand. Travis Walker led early but about 4 laps in
Tim Shields found the right line and made the pass. Shields checked out and
never looked back as he won his first feature of 2009 at I-35 Speedway.
Travis Walker held on to finish second, Mike Taylor finished 3rd, Sam
Florence had another impressive run finishing 4th and Wayne Sutton was 5th.
Sam Florence and Wayne Sutton both gained 7 spots but the hard charger award
goes to Florence for his higher finishing position.
28 IMCA Sport Mods checked into the pit area tonight and what a show they
put on. Brian Assel and Clay Hale battled for most of the race. Hale would
finally make the pass and seemed to have it in cruise control until a late
yellow came out. That put the points leader and last weeks feature winner
Blake Peeler right on his back bumper. Hale held Peeler at bay until there
were about 2 laps to go and Peeler made the pass and went on to claim his
second consecutive win. Hale held on for 2nd, Clint Baker finished 3rd,
Brian Assel was 4th and Jon Boller Jr. was 5th. Aaron Duvall returned after
taking some weeks off and gained 12 spots to win the hard charger.
The IMCA Hobby Stock feature was a great race to watch for the last 10 laps
tonight. Coming into tonight Eric Stanton has led the way with 8 wins on the
season. Chad Shaw stepped behind the wheel of the Whitney racing x9a car
while Alexis Whitney is cheerleading and Shaw had a great battle with
Stanton. They were side by side for about the last 10 laps, Shaw finally
made the pass on the last lap and held off Staton. Stanton held on to 2nd,
Matthew Lance, 1 week removed from his first win finished 3rd, Cody Cleghorn
was 4th and Greg Kuehn 5th. Stanton did gain 1 more position than Shaw and
took home the hard charger.
The IMCA Stock Cars set the tone for Boller Motorsports tonight as Thomas
Roberts took home his second consecutive win. Roberts held off Brad Whitney
who finished 2nd. Jake Cameron had another strong run finishing 3rd, Tyler
Corkins had his best finish tonight as he came home 4th and Gene Stigall was
5th. Roberts and Corkins both gained 6 positions but Roberts takes home the
hard charger by his higher finish.
It's been a season of frustration for the Boller Motorsports IMCA Modified
piloted by Jeremiah Asher. Alot of motor problems have plagued this team.
Tonight might have been the bright spot this team needed to turn the last 5
weeks of the season around. Asher had a good battle with Pat Neely until
Neely got turned around and Truman Asher, Jeremiahs younger brother moved up
to second. Under yellow Truman got along side his older brother to let him
know he was there. Jeremiah would eventually hold off Truman to get his
first win of 2009. Truman held on to second, Jeff Marriott was 3rd, Steven
Glenn blew a motor in hot laps, got it changed, started 19th and motored to
a 4th place finish. Jason Estes would hold off John Crews for 5th. Glenn
gained 15 spots to win the hard charger award.
Next week is another IMCA rules points night, then the next weekend is a non
points open rules night. So come on out to I-35 Speedway where its dirt
trackin at its best on Saturday nights!
