Erik Maggard Wins The Battle As Dalton Grabs The Title
SPRINGFIELD, MO (Sept. 5) - Despite heavy rains only 24 hours earlier,
Springfield Raceway was able to get the Quick-Quarter ready to crown the
2009 season championships as 3 titles were up for grabs with over 70 race
teams in the pits ready for action.
The USRA Modified feature was going to be a points battle duel as 3 time
raceway champion Jackie Dalton came into the night with only a 1 point lead
over mitch Keeter. As the field took the green with both Dalton and Keeter on
the front row it was Dalton getting the jump with Keeter right on his
side.On lap 4,Erik Maggard began his move to challange Dalton with Keeter
and Bobby Pearish close behind. With Maggard diving to the inside groove of
Dalton the duo ran wheel to wheel for 8 laps before Maggard made the low
groove stick going into turn 4 grabbing the top spot on lap 15 as Keeter
began to fall back. The Yellow waved on lap 17 as Steve Muilenburg had
problems sending him to the pits ending his night. On the double file
restart,Dalton picked the low groove as Keeter got a fresh breath of life
and began to apply pressure to Dalton in the championship chase.Up front
Maggard could run anywhere high or low as he pulled away taking home the win
as all eyes were on the side by side battle of Dalton and Keeter.Keeter
pulled along side of Dalton several times on the top side, but Dalton got the
better grip of the turns as dalton's runner-up spot grabbed the championship
with Keeter,Jim Body and Jody Tillman completing the top 5.
The Bomber championship chase went to the wire along with the
feature.Defending champion Robert High grabbed the early lead with James
Redus on his inside. The lead duo ran side by side several laps as Shawn
Strong was making his move forward.During a long green run,High began to
open up the lead until lap 15 when the leaders got into lapped
traffic.Strong and Redus closed-up the gap and applied pressure to High.On
lap 16,Strong nosed ahead at the line with Redus making the low groove
stick. On lap 18, with Strong using the middle lane and High on the top
groove,Redus went low as the 3 touched out of turn 2 with Strong spinning
around and almost saving the car and Redus going sideways.High was able to
keep his foot in the throttle and kept going as the yellow waved.Strong was
crossways in turn 3 as Redus went to the pits.High would be placed in the
lead spot as he never broke forward motion and held off a last lap challange
from Mike Hailman to take the win along with the season
championship.Following the lead duo to the line were Jack Hamer,Tyler Schoen
and Bob Maggard Sr. in the top 5 as 15 of the 18 starters were on the lead
lap.
The Legends provided 2 and 3 wide racing as point leader Jason Rayle and
Dave comer brought the field to the green as they ran side by side with
Comer finally taking over the lead on the outside lane with Park Jones and
Rob Watson following closely behind. With 2 and 3 wide action,Rayle and Jones
tried several times to move around Comer who was going for his 5th straight
SpringfieldRaceway win.On lap 10,Jones got around Rayle and closed-up the
ground on Comer with Rayle then challanging. On lap 18,Tyler horton had a
rearend lock-up ending his night and setting up a last lap shootout. On the
restart, comer got a good jump with jones fighting Rayle for the runner-up
spot.Comer took the win with Rayle,Jones,Watson and Kaleb Copher completing
the top 5 as Rayle took home the season title.
The SportMods found 29 cars fighting for a 20 car field. The top 16 in points
were locked into the A feature that were present with the remaining cars
running 2 B Feature to set the grid.2009 Champion Billy street brought the
field to the green with Roy Maynard and JC Morton following closely.A couple
of early yellows kept everyone bunched-up as Street was setting a fast
pace.Maynard and Morton were swaping second place back and forth as Darrin
Crisler was moving quickly. On lap 13,the yellow flew for Jim VanZandt as the
field bunched-up again.Street again took control with Maynard,Morton and
Crisler battling.15th starter Steve Muilenburg had moved into the top 7 and
was closing quickly.Point contender Mike Hailman had problems and his night
ended on lap 15.The Yellow waved as Muilenburg's strong forward run ended
with rearend problems. On the restart, jerry Lankton's forward move ended in
the pits as Maynard closed on Street. The duo went wheel to wheel as Morton
started to slide backward from the leaders. On the last lap.Maynard made a
strong inside move to try to overtake Street, but Street nosed ahead grabbing
the win along with the championship as Maynard,Morton,Crisler and Eric
Tinderholt crossed in the top 5.Maynard who was getting ready for the IMCA
SportMod nationals in Boone forgot to change tires and had the wrong tires
on forcing a drop in the final standing moving Morton to second followed by
Crisler,Tinderholt and Darrell Jackson in the top 5.
