Binning shines at Central Missouri Speedway
By: Sam Stoecklin

WARRENSBRUG, MO (Sept. 5) - The skies finally cleared and the sun broke through late in the afternoon to shine on the track Saturday night for night one of the special Labor Day weekend events at Warrensburg’s own Central Missouri Speedway.

Night one of the two-day event, which was postponed from Friday night, was highlighted by the 25-lap, $1,500-to-win, scratch that, $1,700-to-win feature event in the ULMA late model division. An anonymous donor put up an extra $200 to the winner last night for the late models and another anonymous donor added an extra $100 to the driver who advanced the most positions in the feature event for the late model drivers. The ‘mighty’ modifieds also competed on Saturday night racing for the inside row starting positions for the grand finale on Sunday.

Modifieds started the program with four heat races as the 33 drivers on hand competed under the passing-points method to determine the inside row starting positions for Sunday night’s 40-lap main event. Heat race winners were Jason Thompson, Mark Dotson, Shad Badder, and Don Crnkovich. After the heat races concluded, the top 12 drivers in total passing points participated in a front-stretch redraw for their scramble starting positions and it was Lucas Conley who came away with starting position number one with Dotson drawing number two for the scramble. Two b-main events were also run to determine the final starting positions for the 20-lap scramble as Terry Schultz and Dave Meyer took the transfers from the first b-main. Tyler Schmidt and former 2-time modified track champion Gary Blackburn, Jr. grabbed the remaining two transfers to complete the field for the scramble.

For the scramble event, Conley and Dotson led the 20-car field to the green flag. The yellow flag flew early in the event as Dave Meyer’s car stalled off of turn two with one lap in the books. Upon the restart, Dotson checked out on the field with Conley and Crnkovich fighting for second. With ten laps in the books Don Crnkovich began to reel in the leader as Conley held on to third, Justin Boney fourth, Chad Lyle fifth and Jason Thompson sixth. On lap thirteen, Crnkovich pulled right onto the back bumper of Dotson just as Boney took third from Conley. Crnkovich made a bid for the lead on lap eighteen with Dotson narrowly leading the lap, then, on lap 19; Crnkovich made the pass stick and sailed on to the victory, taking the pole position for Saturday night by winning the event. Behind Crnkovich, who won the Memorial Day special earlier in the year, were Dotson, Boney, Conley, Thompson, and Chad Lyle, behind the top six were Jamie Ragland, Don Dannar, Luke Feeback, Badder, Jim Moody, and Steven Bowers to round out the top twelve transfers for Sunday night.

Up next were the late models for three heat races, there were 25 ULMA late models on hand, the late models also competed under the passing-points method for their feature event lineup. The three heat race winners were Joe Walkenhorst, Dustin Vance, and Shawn Rayfield. It was Rayfield of O’Fallon, Missouri who led the charge at the front of the field for the 25-lap main event for the late models with Joe Walkenhorst, Robbie Test, and Jon Binning in hot pursuit. Several cautions for debris flew early in the race with Dwight Niehoff, Joe Walkenhorst, and Zach Green all leaving the track early with problems.

Jon Binning began to charge his way to the front by taking over second on lap number two shortly after another restart but debris brought out the caution flag and Binning had to go back to third as the field was realigned. James Stafford, Randy Ainsworth, and Danny Monroe also exited the race early as did Bob King. Rayfield, Perryman, Binning, Barker, Robbie Test, and Vance were the top six once things got into a rhythm by lap five. Rayfield began pulling away from Perryman and Binning in second and third with David Barker close by in fourth. Binning took over second by lap nine with Perryman slipping back to third. On lap ten, the caution waved for Brett Wood’s spin in turn three with Rayfield leading the field back to green-flag action. Binning pressured Rayfield for the lead on the restart on the high side as the two drivers moved away from third-running Barker.

Rayfield lost the lead on lap twenty to Binning after getting caught behind Derek Nevels. With Binning now at the helm, the caution flew one final time as Rayfield pressured Binning to try to regain the lead. On the restart, Binning gave it all he could to hang on to the lead with Rayfield breathing down his neck in second. In the end, Binning's All-Pro Electrical GRT by Bodee's was too strong and Binning came away with his richest payday ever, claiming the $1,700 first-place payout. Rayfield finished a respectable second, just in front of Barker who ran a great race into third. Steve Clancy gained several positions and came away fourth, one spot ahead of fifth running Allen Perryman and 'Flyin' Mike Ryun in sixth. Ryun also received bonus money from an anonymous donor as he gained the most positions as a ULMA member driver from his original starting position of twenty-second. The rest of the top ten at the conclusion of the event were Gary Billings Jr., Bob Test, Walt Imhoff, and Ashley Lancaster, in her first-ever CMS appearance
