Chris Moore wins Rislone USCS Modified Missouri State
Championship 2009 at Malden
MALDEN, MO (Sept. 12) - Chris Moore from Coldwater, Mississippi beat K&N
Filters Pole Position starter Brandon Smith from Batesville, Arkansas into
turn one of the 40-lap Rislone USCS Modified Series Missouri State
Championship race. For the next 40 laps Moore led the race by a small margin
over Smith only to see the thriller come down to a drag race down the last
straightaway to the flag stand. Moore won the battle by the length of his
front bumper over Smith.
The duo started together in the front row after each driver won one of
two 15-lap semi-features on Friday night to earn their starting positions.
The race was one of the cleanest and best modified races the series has seen
during the 2009 season. The first fourteen laps went caution free before
Jeff Greene looped his #9x car exiting turn four to bring out the first of
three caution flags. The race then continued until lap thirty-five before
the caution flag appeared again, this time for 2008 Malden Speedway track
Champion, Paul Reeder from Malden, Missouri who spun in turn two while
running in seventh position. On the re-start of the race Craig Vaughn from
Hernando, Mississippi also spun bringing out the race's final caution flag.
With just five laps to go, Moore got a good jump on Smith and the field, but
Smith charged back and raced around the outside of Moore entering turn three
and then raced Moore to the finish line only to come up short by less than a
foot.
Former Malden Speedway track Champion, Robert Powers from Campbell, Missouri
charged from his thirteenth starting position into third place at the
finish. The 2008 Rislone USCS Modified Series Champion, Ashley Newman from
Ripley, Tennessee finished in the fourth position after battling Smith and
Powers for the runner-up spot most of the race. Current Rislone USCS
Modified Touring Series point's leader, Hunter Rasdon from Jonesboro,
Arkansas rounded out the top five drivers.
Michael Lee from Paris, Tennessee who set fast time during time trial
qualifying on Friday night led the next group in sixth place. Dexter,
Missouri young gun, Austin Matthews followed in seventh position and Scott
Burge from Puxico, Missouri finished eighth. Troy Fowler from Portageville,
Missouri finished in the ninth position. Jeff Greene rallied back from his
lap fourteen incident to finish in the tenth position. Twenty of the
twenty-three open wheel modified cars that started the Rislone USCS Modified
feature race finished the event.
Hunter Rasdon won the previous night's 6-lap Rislone USCS Power Dash. As
previously mentioned, Brandon Smith won Friday night's first semi-feature
qualifying race. Chris Moore won the second 15-lap qualifying event. Robert
Powers garnered the Comp Cams Hard Charger Award for the driver passing the
most cars in the main event. Powers passed ten cars in the 40-lap main
event. For more information on the Rislone USCS modified series please visit
