SPRINGFIELD, MO (April 17) - The 2010 racing season kicked-off Sat night at the quick-quarter of the Springfield Raceway with side by side action all night long with over 70 race teams in the pits. Erik Maggard picked-up where he left off for the late 2009 season as Maggard led all 20 laps of the A-Modified feature. After earning the most passing points,Maggard who started on the pole moved to the top groove on the start taking the spot away from outside row starter Brian Green and never looked back as the race for second place was tight all night long between Green,Mitch Ketter, defending champion Jackie Dalton,Brandon Maggard,Steve Muilenburg and a fast moving Jody Tillman as these drivers went wheel to wheel. The only caution on lap 15 turned to a red flag situation as Rocky Berliew took a ride off turn 3 as the transmission in his car exploded and came through the car.Berliew was removed and transported to the hospital to be checked-out.On the final restart,Maggard again pulled away in grabbing the first win of the season as Green overtook Keeter at the line for the runner-up spot followed by Dalton and Brandon Maggard. The SportMods feature had Sean Williams and Willie wilson bring the 20 car field to the green with Williams grabbing the early lead and Wilson following close behind as as Roy Maynard and Steve Muilenburg,Colt Cheevers,JC Morton and Jerry Lankton all battled. With Williams setting a fast pace on the lightning quick oval,3 wide action for positions was the norm as Wilson was holding a strong second place. The first yellow waved on lap 9 as Eric Tinderholt came to a halt in turn 4.On the double-file restart,Williams again pulled away as Wilson had his hands full for second place. On lap 11,JC Morton took a spining ride on the backstretch bringing out the last yellow. On the restart, Williams again pulled away as Roy Maynard was applying pressure to Wilson and moved into second on lap 14 as Muilenburg and Cheevers followed suit. In the final 3 laps,Maynard closed up on Williams as Seam kept in the high groove with Maynard going 1 lane higher while Cheevers was trying to make the middle lane work.As the checkered flew,Williams took the win with Maynard,Cheevers,Muilenburg and Wilson completing the top 5 in an action packed feature. The StreetStock feature had plenty of action as Jack Hamer brought the field down to the Green flag with Bobby Maggard Sr on his outside. This duo ran wheel to wheel for the opening 2 laps and then Hamer began to pull away as Tyler Schoen moved into the second place spot as Rusty Forrest and Rex Freize battled for spots. On lap 6,Schoen closed-up on Hamer and on lap 8 a small bobble by Hamer allowed Schoen to pull even.Schoen and Hamer went wheel to wheel for the next 3 laps but by lap 13,Schoen had pulled away and went to grab the victory followed by Hamer,Tyrel Jones,Dan Wood and Matt Keethy at the stripe. The Legends picked-up the tight action again just as they did in 2009.On the start pole setter David Bauer had his throttle cable come loose jamming up the inside row and sending Rob Watson and Gary hockman to the infield. On the restart, outside front row starter Jay Reynolds took to the high groove as Justin Comer and Park Jones stayed close while Rod Baird and Bill Cottrill were battling. The race went 20 laps solid Green as the battle for the lead was tight with Reynolds,Jones and Comer swapping spots as Reynolds stayed in the top spot as Jones and Comer kept their battle up front while trying to overtake Reynolds. As the chekered flew,Reynolds grabbed the victory with Comer nipping jones for the runner-up spot followed by Jones,Baird and Cottrill at the stripe. In the debut of the newly formed MidWest Modz,14 year old and third generation driver JC Newell grabbed the lead on the opening lap from his second row starting spot and never looked back in recording his first ever SpringfieldRaceway victory.Bobby Gough,Mark Raymond,Gary Krebs and Earl Muilenburg followed. Only 1 Purestock checked-in as first time ever driver Josh Pinkley was declared the winner taking home a beautiful throphy.Josh also competed with the StreetStock class and did a good job i his first race ever.
