WEST PLAINS, Mo. (April
24) – A former track champion is the new owner and promoter at West Plains
Motor Speedway. Dexter Frost has purchased
the popular southeast Missouri speedplant from Don and Billie Gibson. The
first Saturday night show for IMCA sanctioned Modifieds on the 3/8-mile red
clay oval is tentatively planned for May 1. “We had talked with Don
and Billie in months past about buying it,” Frost said. “The Gibsons have
invested a lot in this facility and we know we’ve got some big footsteps to
follow, but everything is coming together and we’re excited about getting
the season started.” Frost raced in the super
stock class at West Plains for 10 seasons, winning one track title. His son
Dakota topped the youth hobby stock standings last season. “We love this facility,
especially the racing surface,” said Frost, whose brother Doyle will also
work at West Plains. “This is one of the premier tracks around.” Weekly IMCA point races
continue through Sept. 25. A more complete schedule,
including holiday specials on Memorial Day, July 4 and Sept. 4 and the July
30-31 Show-Me, as well as events such as truck and tractor pulls and
demolition derbies, will be announced when the website is updated later this
month. “We have had a very big
field of Modifieds in the past and it seemed like other tracks in the area
that weren’t sanctioned didn’t have the same numbers,” Frost said. “Our
drivers really enjoy racing with IMCA. I think we averaged 23-24 cars a
night last year even with the economy the way it was.” IMCA has sanctioned the
Modified division at West Plains since 1993. Points earned there figure
toward ButlerBuilt Central Region standings.
