Flood And Morton Big Winners In Midway Spring Fling As
Russell Nips Tillman In A-Mods Event
LEBANON, MO (April 2, 2011) - The racing season officially got underway with
the 2nd Annual LebanonMidway Spring Fling as action was wheel to wheel all
weekend long with extra money up for grabs as the A-Mods made a return visit
with a thrilling finish.
Action started with the Central Bank FactoryStocks as pole setter Jason
Russell and former champion Bob Gustin brought the field to the
green.Russell jumped to the early lead with Gustin and James Flood right on
his heels. This trio pulled away as defending champion Tyson Troutman,Tim
Petty,Bobby Ratterree and Brad Gideon battled. Up front with Russell keeping
down low and Gustin looking for running room,Flood moved to the middle lane
and pulled even with Gustin for second place. The first caution waved on lap
10 as Brad Gideon spun in turn 4 bunching the field up.On the Double-file
restart,Flood was able to work in the middle lane and pulled even with
leader Russell. This battle went side by side with Flood nipping Russell on
lap 14 to grab the lead as Russell was only 1/4 of a car behind as Gustin
was still in the hunt running third while the second pack of Troutman,Tim
Petty a fast moving Brian Webster(started 13th) and Ratterree were swapping
spots. The race changed on lap 17 as contender and early leader Russell
pulled off the pace down the backstretch with problems ending his chance for
victory as the caution waved.Bunching the field-up,Flood found Gustin right
behind him as Troutman was coming strong. On the restart Flood kept in the
middle lane and captured the win with Gustin,Troutman,Petty and a fast
moving Dexter Frost crossed the stripe in the top 5 as Webster got alittle
low in turn 2 on the last lap moving him backwards.
The A-Mods return to the Midway for the opening race as fast qualifier Jason
Russell brought the field to the Green flag with Tyler Brown along
side.Russell wasted no time in pulling away as Brown and Justin Neuman
swapped second place early while Springfield Turkey classic winner Jody
Tillman was challanging. With Russell setting a quick pace,Tillman worked
around Brown on lap 8 to grab second place and began to close-up on the
leader Russell while Brown,Neuman,JC Morton and 2 time Midway champion Jamie
Ragland were racing for posistion.during the long green flag run,Tillman has
caught Russell on lap 13 and was challanging for the top spot as Neuman's
night ended with problems moving Brown back into third place with Morton and
Ragland coming quickly. On lap 17 while looking to the inside lane,Tillman's
bid for the win went south as the car got sideways in turn 4 allowing
Russell to pull back ahead and grab the win with Tillman moving back quickly
for second with Ragland after starting 11th nipping Tyler Brown for third
place with Brown and Morton following.
The Energy Companies PureStock feature provided plenty of excitement and
outstanding racing as Kolt Barker and Midway champion Korey Barker brought
the field to the Green with 3 wide action right off the start. The caution
waved as Doug Phelps got sideways in turn 1 restarting the race.During the
opening action pole setter Kolt Barker and others had made contact as Barker
went to the pits for a tire change and quick repairs but restartec last.On
the restart,Kory Barker grabbed the lead from Shorty Doublin as Elijah
Keepper moved on the top groove into third place. The lead duo of Barker and
Doublin pulled away as Doublin kept Barker in his sights. On lap 6,Doublin
took over the lead with a smooth move on Barker in turn 3 and began to pull
away. This 15 lap event went all green as Doublin was looking for the big
payday as he put distance between himself and Barker while the race for
third was tight as Keepper, a fast moving Kolt Barker,Danny Caffey and
Robert Doublin battled. On lap 13 Doublin began to slow as the tire started
to go flat on his right rear allowing Kory Barker to close-up.Taking the
white flag,Barker took over the lead as Doublin was keeping the car going
even with the tire rolling off the rim.Barker would grab the victory as Kolt
Barker nipped Doublin for the runner-up spot while Doublin hung on to third
with Keepper and Caffey completing the top 5.
The Aaaron's B-Mods were in full force with a big payday up for grabs.Shawn
Strong and defending Midway champion Michael Stake brought the field to the
green with Strong leading the opening lap as JC Morton snuk by Stake to grab
second place. In the tight battle up front. On lap 2,Morton took the top spot
with Strong,Scotty Drake,Stake and a fast moving Kris Jackson following.A
few single cars spins kept the field bunched-up as Morton and Strong were
keeping things interesting up front while Scott Drake and Stake were side by
side.During the green run,Morton began to open up a small lead as Strong
moved to the top groove while Stake moved back into third was side by side
action was the norm. With morton opening up the lead,Stake made a low move
on Strong to grab second place and began to close-up on leader Morton while
Strong and Drake were battling and behind them JC Newell,Kris Jackson and
Brennon Willard were battling.Morton survived some last lap moves by Stake
to take the win with Stake,Scott Drake,Strong and Jackson in the top 5 as 13
of th 19 starters completed the lead lap.
The Rocky Ridge Construction Midwest Modz showed the crowd that in olny
their 2nd year of this class it was growing and provived excellent racing
action.Midway champion Lil JC Newell and Trevor Drake brought the field to
the green, but Joplin's Bobby gough made an outstanding move to grab the
opening lead after a 3 wide pass as Newell settled into second with Drake
and Rich Reynolds following.Gough began to open up the lead as Newell and
Drake went side by side for second place with Drake grabbing that spot on
lap 5.Gough's lead went away on lap 6 as Timmy Ballinger Jr and Adam
Lowrance got together bunching the field up.On the restart,Gough started to
pull away again, but Drake began to reel him in and on lap 8 the duo went
wheel to wheel with Drake taking command.Drake would pull away during the
long green run as gough was a solid second place as the race for third was
tight with Rich Reynolds,Newell and veteran Earl Muilenburg racing for
third.Reynolds would secure that spot while Drake was opening the lead
up.With the checkered flying,Drake took home the win with
Gough,Reynolds,Muilenburg and Newell in the top 5.
The StreetStock feature was short on cars but not in action as pole setter
Mark Simon and Zack Zeugin went side by side with Zeugin taking the opening
lead.On lap 2 with a wild 4 wide action,Simon grabbed the top spot back as
Midway champion Joe Francis and Lebanon's Monk Barker were part of the
action.Simon and Zeugin went two wide as Francis made a move on lap 3 from
third to first in grabbing the lead.Simon got sideways early and fell back
as Ted Ballinger went to the pits with problems.Up front Francis opened up a
big lead as Simon was trying to gather it back up and was moving back up
front.By lap 10 of the 12 lap event,Simon was closing up on Francis quickly
