WARRENSBURG, MO (July 2, 2011) - Night one of the 8th Annual Tom Wilson Memorial BBQ Bowl weekend racing events at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) thrilled the fans with exciting late model and modified action on a hot summer evening as ULMA late model drivers were racing for two crowns last night. Steve Clancy out of Odessa grabbed the $1,500 CMS special feature crown with his second CMS victory this season while Jason Bodenhamer wrapped up the Imhoff Construction ULMA Triple Crown Shootout. Jacob Ebert of Oak Grove claimed his seventh b-modified feature as Jimmy Morris from Blue Springs went home with his fifth win of the season in a convincing street stock triumph. The modified division ran a scramble event to cap off the first night of inside-row qualifying as Kelly Shryock from Fertile, Iowa crossed the finish line in first to claim the pole position for Sunday evening’s Tom Wilson Memorial $5,000 to win race. This weekend the ULMA late models were racing for the big CMS pay-out and also competing on the final night of their week-long Triple Crown points racing. Jason Bodenhamer of Centerview edged Kevin Coyne for the Triple Crown Championship after races concluded. The CMS late model action was intense with three heat races setting up the starting grid for 17 drivers on hand. In the All American Auto Car and Truck Sales heat race one, Steve Clancy claimed the win. Brett Wood pulled ahead for the win in the B&D Transmission heat number two. Chad Clancy won Bodee’s Race Bodies heat number three. The Rod End Supply CMS 30-lap main event field was set with Clancy and Woods on the front row cranking hard on their machines for the early lead. When the green flew to start the final Triple Crown event, Steve Clancy drove hard down low leading the early laps. Wood and Bodenhamer had strong runs with some high-side action from Woods. Later in the race, Bodenhamer moved up into second spot using whatever line he could find to attempt a move around Clancy. Coyne then returned back up into the top five after an early race spin in turn four. Coyne looked strong late in the race and used a last lap pass at the finish line as Bodenhamer slowed when he hit the front wall. Clancy stayed on the
low-side most of the night and crossed the line with the lead as the
checkers flew for his second feature win this season taking home the $1,500
special event pay. Coyne with another solid finish finished second,
Bodenhamer settled for third and with a smooth late run, Kevin Kaiser was
fourth with Wood fifth, and James McMillin sixth. The street stock car count shot back up this week and provided the loyal fans with some fun to watch side-by-side racing action. Chad Eickleberry, Jimmy Morris and Current point’s leader Brian Ziegler triumphed in the Expressways Food Shop and Eickleberry Concrete heat races early in the program. In the Brooks Automotive LLC main event, Morris started by leading the race on the low side from the front row. John Brooks was on the move up into second along with Eickleberry in the top-three. It appeared Brian Ziegler would challenge for the lead with some high-side action with Brooks keeping the low-side covered. As they crossed the finish line, it was Morris who claimed his fifth feature event of the season with Brooks second and points leader Ziegler, settling for third. Bryce McMillin with a good run was fourth with Michael Mullins in fifth and Eickleberry in sixth. The first night of qualifying for the 8th Annual Tom Wilson Memorial BBQ Bowl had 45 talented modified drivers from all over the Midwest competing for 12 inside-row starting positions. Terry Schultz claimed the win in The Cornerstone Agency heat race number one. Luke Driskill then grabbed the win in the Beebe Heating & Cooling second heat race. Seeburg Muffler heat number three went to John Allen with his first appearance at CMS in several years. The Dale’s Towing heat race number four win went to Dennis Bunger. In the final heat, Matt Johnson grabbed the checkers for the victory. In two b-main events, Dennis Elliott and Dustin Boney transferred to the scramble as did Steve Picou and Rick Beebe Elliott and Picou were the B-main winners for the 12-lap races. The final 20-lap scramble was stacked with Richards and Bunger starting on the front row after an intermission draw for top-12 drivers in heat race passing points. Terry Schultz actually held the pole position, but had to pull out due to mechanical problems. Richards dove low on the first lap for the early lead, but Kelly Shryock and Randy Zimmerman, driving the back-up Chad Lyle car, was in close pursuit just behind. Meanwhile Allen moved up into the top three to challenge for the lead. Terry Beckham was one of only a few to use the high-side to move up in the race. Several yellows for mechanical problems in the scramble caused Lyle, Aaron Marrant, Tim Karrick, Dustin Boney, Dean Wille, Steve Picou and several others to depart the track for the night. Those drivers will have to qualify on night two to make the show. As the double checkers flew, Shryock took the win for the pole position on Sunday night. Allen was second, Richards, Beebe, Matt Johnson, Beckham, Luke Driskill, Jason Thompson, Dennis Elliott, David Barker, Austin Siebert and Randy Zimmerman will set up the inside row for Sunday night. A driver can decide to withdraw his starting spot, but it seems unlikely a driver will take a chance with this field of talented drivers to attempt to qualify for another spot.
