24 Raceway, Moberly MO April 22 report w/promo for April 29
by: Pam Hassler
MOBERLY, Mo. (April 22, 2006) - The rumble of 122 race car engines! The cheering
of a great crowd of fans! The enjoyment of super competitive racing on a
fantastic dirt track! All this and more was found at Moberly 24 Raceway on
Saturday night, April 22. A wonderful 20-lap special feature race in the Hornet
division "wowed" the crowd. The NE Kansas Mod Lite/Dwarf Association joined the
five regular classes of cars to demonstrate their speed and competitive spirit.
Brandon Smith (11 yrs. old) of Mexico, MO was the lucky winner of a new bicycle
donated by the 24 Raceway. The 50/50 drawing of $235 was collected by Jim Tuggle
of Moberly who was also fortunate to have been a winner in early 2005. A
non-profit organization was on site to support soldiers and encouraged fans to
log on to www.AnySoldier.com for more information. A big thank-you goes to
Burger King, KZZT, Country Kitchen and the others who also donated give-aways
for the fans. University of Missouri students in the Journalism Photography
school were also busy snapping pictures of action around the track.
Upcoming events:
April 29 - next week - FAN APPRECIATION NIGHT! - Admission will be only $5 for
adults and FREE for children 12 and under. Come out and enjoy the excitement . A
special Mechanics Race will be exciting in the Hobby Stock Class.
May 13 - Sportsman Class will be competing in a 25-Lap feature special.
May 27 - Gary Scott Memorial - featuring the fast-action W.O.W (Winged Outlaw
Warriors) 360 Sprint Cars
The first feature of the night was the special 20-Lap race in the 4 cyl. Hornet
class. Often these drivers went into the turns, 3 & 4 cars abreast and
demonstrated lots of action with side by side racing for positions throughout
the pack. Perry Morton in #11m from Hallsville, took a serious tumble on the
backstretch but climbed from the car unhurt. A tremendous battle for 2nd, 3rd,
and 4th positions included #33 Kristi Chase (Clark), #01 John Brown
(Huntsville), and #02 Richard Moret (Cairo) who finished as written, behind
feature winner #3 Rob Chase (Clark) who took home the $250 prize. Chase #3 was
also the feature winner last week. David Lorton in #24/7 from Moberly drove hard
with the leaders but finished in 5th place while racing with a flat tire the
last 4 laps.
The high and low grooves on the track were certainly utilitzed by drivers in the
12-Lap Hobby Stock race. A battle between #11w Mike Wolfe (Madison) and #41
Kevin Renzelmann (Moberly) displayed racing skills by "putting on the heat"
along with #7 Clinton Dale (Jacksonville). Both #11w and #41 gave everything for
the win but Mike Wolfe was victorious with Renzelmann in 2nd, Dale in 3rd. Wolfe
thanked his sponsors and said he "had a blast" and he "likes racing with these
guys".
The Moberly Motors B-Modifieds completed a 15-Lap feature with another repeat
winner from last week. Bob Woodrow, with his #3 from Perry, took a groove that
gave him the lead throughout the race. Starting in 7th position, #82 Kelly Smith
(Kirksville) charged through for 2nd place. Tony Garner #20 (Macon) stayed close
for 3rd place. Chuck Melloway #74x from Hallsville worked his way up to finish
4th. Tyler Lewis from Columbia suffered considerable damage to both ends of his
#4L as a result of a crash on the backstretch.
After a first-lap yellow, the 12-Lap Sportsman feature was restarted and
underway with side by side action. Butch Bailey #111 (Novelty) started 6th but
pushed ahead throughout the race to become the winner of the race. Bailey
recently moved to the area, but is not new to racing as he had raced in Nebraska
and Iowa also. Rick Girard #00 (Columbia) exhibited good racing skills by
starting in 13th position and charged through the field to finish in 4th place.
Second and third places went to hard-fighting competitors Derrick Agee #14JR and
Jerry Ames #69A, both from Huntsville.
The "buzz" from the engines of the NE Kansas Mod Lite/Dwarf Cars flew past the
green flag and continued throughout the race with no incidences causing yellow
flags. David Rafferty, #64 from Kansas City, charged into the lead and
maintained that lead to the checkered flag. A passing match between Bud Lee #21,
Greg Nellis #4 (Valley Falls, KS), and Jeff Rafferty #98 (Lee's Summit) made an
interesting show to finish 2nd, 3rd, and 4th as written. It was enjoyable to
watch these drivers as the track was shared with these "classy" cars.
The A-Modified 20-Lap feature had a great close competition throughout the race
with several passes for positions. A tremendous challenge was between Gary
Blackburn, Jr. #26 (Fulton), Curt Potter #11P (Boonville), and Vance Wilson #22c
(Frankford). A crash on the turn 1 wall caused a pause in action. Drivers #02K
Sonny Kimberling (Slater) and Brad Smith #99 (Excello) both were okay. On the
restart #22c passed #11P and the #26 on the backstretch. Vance Wilson #22c
pulled off his 2nd feature win of the young season, with Gary Blackburn, Jr. #26
in 2nd, and Curt Potter #11P in 3rd. Scottie Roberts #25 (Columbia) earned a 4th
place after starting mid pack and competing with Steve Cain #31 (Columbia) who
finished 5th.
The Moberly 24 Raceway thanks you for your attendance and welcomes you to visit
often. Remember -
