"Speed Bowl 2006"
by: Ron Lueck
MOBERLY, MO. (Sept. 2, 2006) - If this previous two-day show is planned for a
single night, the experienced race fan knows its always a lengthy one and to
plan for a long night of racing. That's what the name of this event implies:
"Speed Bowl 2006". And with the 135 feature laps planned for the five classes at
24 Raceway, plus the additional two consy races of another 10 laps each, the
sponsor and fans got more than their money's worth with some of the best racing
all season here in Moberly, Missouri. Aaron's Sales and Lease Ownership of
Moberly sponsored this event and brought in some $1100 worth of prizes for give-aways
to the full grandstand. There were more than a normal night's worth of caution
from cars leaving debris on the track, and each class had their share of
extended feature laps from going for the bigger payouts for their respective
race. Look for some changes in the format for the next Speed Bowl, maybe even a
return to the 2 day event it has been.
The Hobbies kicked off their part of the night with plenty of cautions, before
Mike Wolfe finally got around Tom Elsen for the win. Then, with 39 entries into
the A-modified race drawn to go for that $2006 published prize, two consy races
were held to fill the final 8 slots for the big 40-lap feature. Then came the
20-lap Hornet race with Rich Moret winning both his heat race and the feature.
Next, the Moberly Motors B-modifieds led the night's racing with the most
cautions for a class. Tony Dunker was one of several coming from out-of-state to
Moberly for this big night of racing being sponsored by Aaron's Sales and Lease
Ownership, and won this B-mod race. The Sportsman class feature was dominated by
Chris Leathers, whose car was not found to be in complience with class rules for
the track, but a last lap pass by Jeff Creed for the win showed that Creed's car
was actually the one to beat for this 25-lapper. Then came the biggest event for
Speed Bowl, the qualifying 24 A-modifieds all shooting for the 1st place prize
money of $2006. With a minimal amount of yellows, Mark Burgtorf led early on, up
to the mandatory stop for refueling at lap 30. And with 10 laps to go, Burgtorf
was not going to let this one get away, leading the rest of the race. Even
though it was a long night of racing, this was some enjoyable time for the true
race fan at 24 Raceway.
Next week, a car show is planned in Moberly at the shopping center behind
Moberly Motors on Friday evening the 8th. Then on Saturday September 9 at 24
Raceway, the 4th annual Moberly Motors B-modified race, with its custom format
of 30 laps in two segments, will be sponsored by MHC Kenworth of Columbia. At
least one new 2007 Kenworth over-the-road truck will be on the grounds for
viewing. Pennzoil is joining in for the sponsorship on this 20-lap race to the
planned 10 minute pit stop for fuel and adjustments to the top ten B-mods. Then
a redraw for the top ten spots will take place by the drivers with these 10 cars
going full tilt for the last ten laps and the $1000 win! Join these B-mods,
along with the four other classes of A-mods, Sportsman, Hobby Stock and 4
cylinder Hornets this coming Saturday night where "Dirt Track Racing at its
Best" happens again at 24 Raceway, east of Moberly Missouri on U.S. Highway 24.
Adult admission to the grandstand will be $15, kids are $5 for ages 6 to 12, and
the stands will open at 4 p.m. Rates for the popular Family Pass are $35 for
this and the next event, and that includes admission to the grandstands for 2
adults and 3 children, ages 6 to 12. Kids under 6 are always free. Racing starts
at 7 p.m. with hot laps at 6:15 following a short drivers' meeting. The complete
report by Pam Hassler, along with a repeated list of the results & promo will
follow on Tuesday 9/5. As a part of the weekend's plans, don't miss the Dream
Factory's 2006 cruise to the track on Satuday afternoon being sponsored by Bentz
GM Country in Macon. Friday night, a benefit dance and charity auction will take
place at Bentz' car lot. Call Jim Brittingham at Bentz 660-385-3195 for more
particulars on these events.
