24 Raceway had plenty of racing to offer on a warm windy night
in Moberly, Missouri
by: Pam Hassler - 24 Raceway, Moberly, MO.
MOBERLY, MO. (Sept. 16, 2006) - Saturday, September 16 was a great night for
racing! Other than a brisk wind, the temperature was perfect for awesome racing
on the high-banked dirt oval at Moberly's 24 Raceway. The regular five classes
of cars were joined by the spectacular W.O.W (Winged Outlaw Warriors) 360
Sprints that really "wowed" the crowd with their speed and skill. Also, the
rained-out B-Mod Shootout Feature from last Saturday was the first race of the
evening. (See results farther in this article)
Thanks went to this week's sponsors - the Commerce Bank of Moberly and Line-X of
Columbia. Many groups, race teams, individuals and corporations have supplied
prizes, giveaways, and sponsorships throughout the year. Moberly's 24 Raceway
and the fans are truly grateful.
Thanks also to Track Chaplain C.B. Riley for the Blessing and Collette Martin
who sang the National Anthem.
Dillon Archer of Moberly generously gave the bicycle this week which was won by
Carley VanBoening from Clarence.
Evelyn "Smith" of the Moberly area was the lucky 50/50 Drawing winner of $241!
UPCOMING EVENTS
Two weeks remain for exciting racing! Next week, on Saturday September 23 at 24
Raceway, brings the annual S.S. Autosport.com All-star race, with a band playing
some rock music later. The winner of each of these ten-lap races for all five
weekly classes of A-modifieds, Moberly Motors B-mods, Sportsman, Hobby Stock and
4 cylinder Hornets will get their car's picture used on the website banner for
www.24racewayinmoberly.com . Be sure to check the website where the complete
qualifying list for the drivers having already made the All-Star race, sponsored
by www.SSAutoSport.com should be listed.
This is by invitation and drivers who have won a race in the 2006 season are
already qualified for this special season-ending race. In addition, the top five
finishers in the Season Points are invited to participate in this race,
sponsored by SSAutoSport.com. So there are still two ways to get invited to the
Invitational: By winning the last weekly series race this Saturday night, or
simply winning a heat race prior to that feature will also get the driver and
car invited into the format. Five classes - ten laps! Trophies will also be
awarded for this event, but the big thing to win is the car's picture on the
banner at the top of the website of www.24racewayinmoberly.com for the entire
next year.
And as an addition to the night's features on September 23, the band of Longshot
will be playing some Classic Rock near the concession stand in the pit area
following the last feature race of the night, for a post-race party! Come and
enjoy this next-to-last date of Saturday night stock car racing this year, where
"Dirt Track Racing at its Best" happens again at 24 Raceway, east of Moberly,
Missouri on U.S. Highway 24. Adult admission to the grandstand will be $10, kids
are $5 for ages 6 to 12, and the stands will open at 4 p.m. Rates for the
popular Family Pass are $25, and that includes admission to the grandstands for
2 adults and 3 children, ages 6 to 12. Kids under 6 are always free. Racing
starts at 7 p.m. with hot laps at 6:15 following a short drivers' meeting.
RACE RESULTS
MHC Kenworth of Columbia B-MOD SHOOTOUT (rescheduled from the rain-out Sat. Sept
9 - after 10 laps of the feature):
The feature began in a single file start, lined up as they stopped last week.
Then after tonight's 10 laps, the top 10 finishers drew for their position for
the last 10 laps. This proved to be a very exciting race! The Kirksville Komet,
Kelly Smith (#82) dominated the show to become the very excited winner of the
$1000 prize! Lots of action occurred with several chases which resulted in Tony
Dunker (#4 Quincy, IL) capturing the 2nd spot. He commented that Kelly was
well-deserving of the win and that he'd like to see the fast cars start in the
rear - be a good race. Closely following in 3rd was high-flying Tony Garner (#20
Macon) who said the win was "kinda' cool, ain't it?" Rounding out the top five
positions were two racers who expertly scrambled for a top place - 4th went to
Porter Collins (# 46 Clarence) and 5th to Wyatt Lantz (#22 Bowen, IL). Excellent
racing!
HOBBYS:
Alan Hultz ( #51 Madison) was successful in leading the entire race of 16
competitors and racked up a great win! Several side-by side battles resulted in
Chris Strain (#83 Higbee) charging into 2nd place followed by Clinton Dale (#7
Jacksonville) in 3rd. Dale had to give up his front starting position because a
problem made him miss the roll onto the track. So after starting in the last
spot, he was impressive as he worked his way up the field. Finishing out the 4th
place was Ryan Crandall (#25cBrashear) and 5th place was Bobby Anders (#20 Hull,
IA). Both made great moves around other good racers. Fun to watch!
HORNETS:
Starting on the front row was an advantage for Rich Moret (#02 Cairo) who landed
his 3rd win in a row and his 6th win of the season. After starting in mid-pack,
Brooke Hassler (#21 Columbia) eventually broke through several cars to gain the
2nd spot with Kristi Chase (#33 Clark) coming up close to finish in 3rd after
also starting mid-field behind Hassler. Gordon Blankenship (#17Keokuk, IA) had a
good run to take the 4th place and John Brown (#1 Huntsville) rolled into 5th
followed by Tanner Richards (#3R Boonville) in 6th. Good racing!
SPORTSMAN:
This was a tight race with several intense moments often between 3 or 4 cars
close together challenging for the top prize. The ultimate winner on the last
lap was Jeff Creed (#01 Cairo) who battled back and forth several times with 2nd
place finisher Randy Mauzey (#14 Madison) driving Pete Agee's car. More heavy
pressure was displayed by 3rd place winner Larry Minor (#57 Moberly) and 4th
place finisher Tim Eravi (#3 Moberly). Fifth place went to Buddy Cundiff (#9
Harrisburg) followed by another hard-charger Derrick Agee (#14JR Huntsville).
Creed stated that he was "hooked up real good after changing a few things from
the heat race". Awesome race!
A-MODS:
Steve Potter (#1P Boonville) worked hard throughout the race to celebrate his
first win of the season! This was another close race for the evening with
several position changes. Todd Bates (#49 Canton, IL) motored into 2nd place
after side-by-side racing with 3rd place finisher Bill Baker (#3 Hannibal). Mike
Hoover (#71 Mexico) managed to stay up front early on and challenged hard for
the top spot but had to settle for 4th after a restart. Following in 5th was
Matt Dotson (#88D Sturgeon) who also had some laps as a top contender. Potter
was excited with his win and said it was "Awesome! I loved the track. It was
slick and I could take off."
Great racing excitement!
B-MODS:
What an unbelievable night for Kelly Smith (#82 Kirksville) as he once again
snagged another VICTORY for the night! He had to give a lot of effort for
several laps as he raced hard to get the lead around Porter Collins (#46
Clarence) who had Smith on his tail. Smith then slipped back behind Tony Garner
(#20 Macon). A few laps from the end he succeeded to get around both Collins and
Garner to collect his 3rd win of the season. Garner earned the 2nd spot followed
by 3rd place finisher Tony Dunker (#4 Quincy, IL). Both these two drivers traded
places as they finished just the opposite as they did earlier in the first race
- the Shootout! Collins dropped into the 4th place followed by another top
contender Chuck Melloway (#74x Hallsville) in 5th. Bob Woodrow (#3 Perry) also
had a great run as he finished closely in 6th. Needless to say, Smith was very
excited! Congratulations!
Great competition!!!!
WINGED OUTLAW WARRIOR 360 SPRINTS:
Phew! These drivers were fast! They zipped past the grandstand and around each
other, flew past lapped cars and still seemed to know where they were! They were
fascinating to watch! It was a great night for Brian "Brownie" Brown (#21 Grain
Valley) when he took the drop of the green and never looked back as he rocketed
into victory lane! However, he had some really fast racers behind him! Mike
Trent (#71Rocheport) made some great moves to score a 2nd place and Brian Grimes
(#6 Slater) powered the line to land an impressive 3rd place spot. John Corbin
(#15 Carrolton) worked hard to keep a 4th position and Toby Brown (#61A
Carthage) battled for the 5th place.
Once again, it was a great night of laps on the track! If you haven't visited
the 24 Raceway yet this season, there are still a couple of weeks left to come
and watch the best racing with most wonderful drivers and greatest cars in the
area!
Grandstand prices are: Adults - $10 Children (ages 6-12) - $5 Children 5 and
under are Free! The popular Family Pass is $25 which admits 2 adults and 3
children (ages 6-12). Hot laps begin at 6:15 pm and Races start at 7:00pm -
after the Blessing from Track Chaplain C.B. Riley and the singing of the
National Anthem.
