HOLDER DOMINATES IN A-MODS AS HORNET SPECIAL KICKS OFF 24
RACEWAY'S OPENER
by: Ron LueckMOBERLY, MO (May 4) - A cool Saturday night welcomed the
2008 Opening Night crowd at 24 Raceway, as 29 Hornets came to compete in the
annual 4 cylinder Hornet Special. And members of the Orscheln Farm & Home
Retail Support Center, enjoying their night at the races, sweetened the
purse for the first 3 places, along with a random draw that came up as 13th
place. That lucky finisher was Caston Jones of Belle who got an extra $25 on
top of the posted prize money for his effort. After a false start and then a
red light to restructure the large field of 24 cars, the race got under way
and had only a single caution for the rest of this non-points special event.
Rob Chase of Clark, starting on the front row, led the entire 20 laps in a
strong performance by the #3, finishing ahead of Huntsville's John Brown,
the pole sitter for the feature. Devin Still of Anabel not only won the
Consy race to get the 19th starting slot in the feature, but then moved
through the pack of the main event to finish in 3rd.
In the A-modifieds, David Holder of Clarence, driving the #71 this season,
led from his front row start in a close race over the 25-car of Columbia's
Scotty Roberts for 16 laps until a missing fuel cap caused Roberts to pit
and not return during a caution period. The #22c of Brandon Lennox moved
into 2nd, ahead of Gary Blackburn with 4 laps to go and they finished in
that order of 2 & 3 behind the 2007 Track Champion, Holder.
A young Blake David from Fulton brought a new B-modified to the newly
re-structured Moberly Motors B-Modified class that absolutely went off and
left the others in this class. A good size class of 15 competitors showed up
this first night to compete in this totally overhauled class of 360 cubic
inch enigine size limits with a maximum of 9:1 compression ratio. Veteran
driver Gary Wilson of Holliday led the first 3 laps until David, nicknamed
"Wild Child" by announcer Doug Mealy, made his move in turns 3 and 4 to pass
for the lead on the inside. He never looked back as he went on to his first
ever feature win. Wilson finished 2nd and Chad Lebsock, from the
Hallsville/Centralia area wound up with 3rd in a race that also saw only a
single caution light.
The Hobby Stock class too has new rules for the season, running the same
size engines and compression ratio as the B-mods. Some 17 drivers tried
their luck in the 12 lap feature that had the biggest rollover of the night.
For the first 9 laps, it was Tom Creed in the #35 leading over Kevin
Renzelmann's #41 until on that lap 9, Renzelmann's rear axle must have
snapped in turn 2 and the car began to barrel roll for 3 or 4 flips, luckily
not catching anyone else up in the wreck. The Huntsville resident came out
ok, but the cleanup took some time to complete, resulting in the 2nd red
flag of the night. Creed, now of Cairo, won both the pole and the feature
for the first race of this class under these new rules. Chase Breid finished
in 2nd, as Nathan Stevenson grabbed 3rd.
MFA / Break Time Sportsman drivers had almost as many drivers competing as
the other classes, with a veteran group of 14 turning out for their opening
night 12 lap race. Moberly's Clinton Dale was followed closely by
Huntsville's Pete Agee for the first 5 laps, but a spin put Agee's orange
#14 Chevy to the back of the pack. Dale led all the laps in this one, with a
late challenge by Matt Greiner of Washington, Iowa who took 2nd. Chad Walter
of Clarence came through with a 3rd place finish.
Next weekend, May 10th, these Sportsman drivers will take their turn at a
special event, the annual MFA / Break Time Sportsman Special. It will be the
featured event of the night, along with the rest of the regular classes of
A-modifieds, the Moberly Motors B-modifieds, Hobby Stocks and the 4 cylinder
Hornets classes. First place will be paying $400 with 2nd getting $80 in the
25 lap event.
Thanks to Rhonda Acton and Tammy Evans for taking on and organizing of the
24 Raceway Jr. Race Fan Club and its associated drawings for kids door
prizes. The Car Shine and Show this weekend had a little tough weather to
get clear of, but the swap meet, craft show and sale did well with
discussions as to becoming a monthly or every other monthly event. Thanks to
all the sponsors for getting their giveaways to the previously mentioned
women in charge and thanks to Orsheln Farm & Home Retail Support Center for
their involvement in last week's Hornet Special.
