Peters Pockets Pay at Culbertson Speedway
By Darin Racek

CULBERTSON, NE (Aug. 4, 2006) - With other special racing events in the area, the car count was lower than hoped at Culbertson Speedway, but nothing was taken away from the racing. Nick Tubbs of Brewster, Kan., Caleb Peters of Oberlin, Kan., Justin Wagner of Culbertson, Karl Wickizer of Palisade, and David Wimer of Trenton earned the A Feature victories of the night.

The IMCA Modified A Feature saw Brice Riley of Indianola at the helm for the first half of the race. Nick Tubbs found his way to Riley near the half way point and passed him going into corner three. Riley looped the car in the middle of corner four, bringing out the caution. Heat winner Jay Schilling of McCook started to charge to the front, and moved into second place with two laps to go, but could not track down the Kansas driver. Jay Steffens of North Platte took home third place, with rookie Charley Brown of Maxwell finishing in fourth, and Robby Haines of Benkelman getting fifth place.

Caleb Peters earned himself and a fan an extra $250 in winning the IMCA Stock Car A Feature. As one of three drivers chosen to go for the extra cash, he showed promise early in the night when he won his heat race. The A Feature was much tougher, as Bob Chalupa of McCook and Shane Stout of North Platte were at the front of the field. After squeezing underneath Stout, Peters worked his way underneath Chalupa to take the lead from him with five laps to go. Chalupa did hold onto second place. Nick Tubbs finished the race in third and had some extra technical inspections on his car after the race, but his car was found to be legal. Stout and North Platte driver Todd Chrisman rounded out the top five.

Despite IMCA Hobby Stock Rookie of The Year candidate John Huffman of McCook at the front spot for the first part of the race, the battle for second place was exciting. Justin Wagner, Austin Davis of Benkelman, and Aaron Koch of Cambridge were putting on a show. Koch eventually had a right rear tire go down, ending his night. On the impending restart, Wagner got by Davis, then overpowered fellow heat winner Huffman on the high side with three laps to go. Wagner would go on to win. Austin Davis also passed Huffman, dropping him to third for the night. Rookies Shane Klockman of Ogallala, celebrating his 16th birthday, and Bruce Hagan, Sr. of Culbertson, who is also in the National rookie hunt, finished in fourth and fifth places.

The Classic Modified A Feature was another doozie. Heat winner Mike Brenning of Culbertson was overtaken by Max Pollmann of Trenton on lap two of the race for the lead. Culbertson Driver Duke Ebert then found his way to Pollmann and tried to get under him in corner three for the lead.
About that same time, Pollmann came down, the two made contact, and the caution came out. Karl Wickizer inherited the lead, followed by Larry Pollmann of McCook. Pollmann was using the high line to try to get by Wickizer, and while it good for him in corner four, it was not good in corner two. Pollmann lost enough ground in corner two to give Wickizer enough advantage in corner four on the last lap to win the drag race to the line. Brenning finished in third place. After changing a tire, Ebert came back into the race and finished fourth. Newcomer Adam Steinmetz of Oberlin, Kan. found the way to fifth place.

Yellow and orange seemed to be right color in the Mini Truck class. David Wimer, in his orange truck, won the Mini Truck Heat race. However, it was the yellow trucks of Bud and Dennis Wasson, both of Lebanon, who were out front early in the caution-free race. Dennis got by Bud on lap three and found a line his truck worked well on. Wimer eventually found the high line for his truck, and used it to catch up to Wasson. Wasson bobbled enough going into corner four with under three laps to go to allow Wimer to take the lead with two laps to go and complete the heat-feature sweep.
Dennis held onto second place, ahead of his father Bud. Josh Bopp of McCook, in the other orange truck, finished in fourth place. Delbert Ridenour, who lives almost across the street from the track, finished in fifth.

Culbertson Speedway will be back in action on Friday, August 11, at 8 PM CDT. It will be the Hitchcock County Fair race, so there will be extra cars, extra crowd, and, for the first time in a decade, a carnival at the fair.
