Carl Comes Back To Win Wild Feature at Lincoln County Raceway
By Darin Racek
NORTH PLATTE, Ne. (May 20, 2006) - The race car drivers put on a good show at
Lincoln County Raceway on May 20 in the four regular classes, as well as the
visiting Colorado Mod Lites. Dan Carl and Todd Chrisman of North Platte, Jason
Koch of Cambridge, Arden Myers of McCook, and Duane Bayne of Nunn, Colo., were
the stars of the show, winning the five A Feature races.
There was a considerable amount of action during the IMCA Modified A Feature.
Heat winner Ronnie Wallace of North Platte took the lead on lap two of the race,
only to give it to Robby Haines of Benkelman on the next one. Heat race winner
Dan Carl was moving through the field towards the front when his right front
tire went flat. Fortunately for him, the caution came out for another car on lap
six, allowing him to get the tire changed without losing a lap. Haines and
Wallace put on a show up front, with Wallace getting by Haines on lap fifteen,
only to let the Benkelman driver sneak back underneath before the lap was
completed. The caution flag waved for the sixth and final time as the cars took
the white flag, setting up a one lap shoot out. Wallace tried to get under
Haines again, but spun in corner two. Haines’s car pushed up in corner four
allowing the third place car on the restart, that of Dan Carl, to sneak
underneath and snatch the win. Charley Brown of Maxwell and Jim Mlady of North
Platte also snuck underneath Haines for second and third places. Andrew
Dillenburg of North Platte rounded out the top five.
The IMCA Stock Car A Feature was a hard fought battle within the race, but a
delight to watch. Shane Stout of North Platte took the lead after leader Casey
Werkmeister of Maywood spun in corner two. He enjoyed the lead until Todd
Chrisman was able to drive a lower line to edge Stout for the lead on lap seven.
For the next five laps, the two heat race winners went side-by-side. A debris
caution got the two to single file out, with Chrisman on top. After the restart,
Stout had to hold off Brady Koch of Cambridge. B Feature winner Justin Bussell
of Imperial then joined the battle for second, and that allowed Chrisman to pull
ahead for a safe victory. Stout worked hard to keep the runner-up spot at the
end of the race. Justin Bussell finished in third place, ahead of Koch and Bryan
Hagan of Culbertson. Charley Brown was the other winner of the IMCA Stock Car
heat race.
The heat race winners in the IMCA Hobby Stock division paced the top spot for
much of the race. Thomas Lower of North Platte took the lead at the start of the
event. Jason Koch eventually worked his way to the front, closely followed by
Lower, cash dash winner John Huffman of McCook, and Justin Wagner. Lower would
spin out of contention, but Koch would hang on to take his second win in two
nights, winning the night before in McCook. Huffman and Wagner would trade
second place until the end, with the spot going to the McCook driver. Austin
Davis of Benkelman and Bret Hagan of Gibbon finished in fourth and fifth places.
Arden Myers gave as dominant performance as he has given in the past few years
during the Mini-Sprint A Feature. He took the lead at the beginning of the race
and had a straightaway lead at the end. His fellow heat winner Toph Harmon of
Holbrook spent most of the race in second place, but was finally passed with a
lap to go by J. R. Way of Lexington and Rick Putnam of Gothenburg. Tom Koster of
North Platte earned the fifth place finish.
The small, yet mighty Colorado Mod Lites buzzed around the big 3/8 mile track at
a furious pace. Travis Bayne of Windsor, Colo., was his heat race winner and
zoomed out to the lead in the A Feature. Unfortunately, he spun, handing it over
to another former IMCA Modified driver, Danny Councilman of Erie, Colo.
Councilman would soon be challenged by Jacob Muhlbauer of Eads, Colo., and Duane
Bayne at the front. Bayne worked Councilman until he was finally able to sneak
by with four laps to go, and went on for the win. Councilman held Muhlbauer off
for second place. Tracy Bayne of Nunn, Colo., finished in fourth, while Travis
Bayne recovered to finish in fifth.
Lincoln County Raceway will be next in action on Saturday night, May 27. The
gates open at 5 PM, and the thunder begins at 7 PM.
