Herbst Repeats, Chrisman Threepeats at Lincoln County Raceway
By Darin Racek
NORTH PLATTE, NE (Aug. 18, 2006) - After four weeks of not having a regular race
because of the Sandhills Shootout, fair, and a rainout, the drivers and fans of
Lincoln County Raceway were ready for some racing on August 18. Despite some
issues with the lighting, of which some never did come on, the drivers picked up
where they left off. Dan Carl, Todd Chrisman, and Jeremy Herbst, all of North
Platte, and Austin Davis of Benkelman raced to the night’s A Feature wins.
The IMCA Modified A Feature had a tough time getting going, as five caution
periods occurred in the first four laps. Despite the stoppages, Don Hagan, Jr.
of Culbertson and Charley Brown of Maxwell managed to swap the lead twice. Hagan
got the lead on lap four and built up a lead when racing resumed. Heat winner
Dan Carl finally found a groove that suited his car, and he moved it towards the
front. On lap thirteen, Carl caught, then passed, Hagan for the lead and went on
to take the win. Hagan had to hold off his son Brandon Hagan for second spot, a
task he was able to accomplish. R. C. Heil of North Platte ran well and earned a
fourth place finish, while Ronnie Wallace of North Platte finish in fifth.
Wallace, Brandon Hagan, and Charley Brown took the other IMCA Modified heat race
wins. Robby Haines of Benkelman took the money in a wild Cash Dash that saw six
of the eight starters taken out on an opening lap crash. All of the cars
involved were able to start the A Main.
The IMCA Stock Car A Feature was paced early by Casey Werkmeister of Maywood,
despite having a miss in his engine. There was quite a battle for second place,
but it became evident Todd Chrisman was serious about moving forward when he
passed three cars in one lap to become the next contender. Lap thirteen was good
for him as well, as he finally dove under the Maywood driver for the lead, and
went on for his third consecutive regular season A Feature win. North Platte
racers Zach Schultz and Shane Stout finished in second and third places. Despite
the trouble, Werkmeister held on for one of his best finishes, fourth place.
Bryan Hagan of Culbertson rounded out the top five. After the race, Dan Eller of
North Platte claimed the carburetor of Zach Schultz. Schultz accepted, and in
doing so, earned Eller’s carburetor. Schultz and Hagan were the heat race
winners.
Half of the IMCA Hobby Stock field was nearly wiped out at the completion of lap
one, after Shane Klockman of Ogallala, John Huffman of McCook, and Bruce Hagan,
Sr. of Culbertson all got together as they came out of corner four. After the
caution was thrown, they all realigned for the restart. Austin Davis showed in
the heat race he was the man to beat when he took that win. He got out front
early, closely followed by Huffman. By the end of the race, Davis had put some
distance between he and the others and finished in first place. Huffman was
followed at the line by Thomas Lower of North Platte, Hagan, and Eric Picquet of
North Platte.
Toph Harmon of Holbrook was not looking for caution flags while leading the Mini
Sprint A Feature. He had a nice lead when a caution period happened with five
laps to go bunched the field up with him. Jeremy Herbst was actually gaining
ground on him before the yellow, but being right behind him on the restart
helped him get by Harmon with three laps to go. It was Herbst’s second win in as
many Mini Sprint race nights. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg also got by Harmon
late to sneak into second place. Rick Putnam of Gothenburg finished in fourth
place, and Meddie Cote of Cozad took home fifth place. Harmon and Trent Hansen
of North Platte were the Mini Sprint heat race winners.
Next weekend will be a big weekend for Lincoln County Raceway. On Friday night,
August 25, the NCRA 360 Sprint Cars will make their first ever appearance to the
track. The Mini Sprints will be the support class. The races will start that
night at 7:30 PM, CDT. Grandstand admission will be $12 for adults, $6 for kids
6 - 12, and free for kids 5 and under.
On Saturday night, August 26, the final points race of the season will be run
for the four regular classes. The races on Saturday night will begin at 7 PM,
CDT. The prices on Saturday night will be regular admission prices, $8 for
adults, $4 for kids 6 - 12, and free for kids 5 and under.
