Rock-n-Racers and A Photo Finish Give Excitement at JMS
By Scott & Rebekah Onnen
McCOOL JUNCTION, Nebraska (July 7) - Every week at Junction Motor Speedway there
are a variety of activities that take place. This week the Rock-n-Racers, the
Speedway’s kids club, was busy with a wet sponge relay. On Saturday, Michelle
Hernandez was selected from the kids club to go down trackside and award
trophies to the drivers. Congratulations to “Most Impressive Driver,” Ryan
Pedersen of Sutton, who received the honor voted on by the fans from the
previous week.
The Holiday Inn Quad Rods started the night off with a clean race. The afore
mentioned Ryan Pedersen (Sutton) started with the lead followed by Jeremy Foos
(Aurora). Chuck Wergin (Milford) took over the second position but was never
able to overcome Pedersen, who hung on for the win.
The ever-exciting Street Stocks took to the track next. Mel Franz (Henderson),
driving the only Ford-powered car on the track, led after five laps followed by
Andy Wilkinson (York) and Shane Stutzman (Milford). Franz quickly fell to fourth
in the back straight away. Byron Boersen (Grand Island) then took the lead on an
official decision to move Stutzman back two positions. Boersen finished with the
victory for the second week trailed by Wilkinson, Stutzman and Franz.
Jerod Timmermans (Grafton) led for the first two laps of the Hobby Stocks until
a flat tire spun the 2 car around. Brandon Wergin (Milford) assumed the lead
until Nick Topil (Rising City) took it away. He stretched a distance between
himself and second. Nobody was able to catch Topil and Jason Wilkinson (Neligh)
and Wergin held on for second and third.
The Modifieds gave a great show for the fans at JMS. Wade Cross (Phillips) &
Justin Bell (Omaha) were side-by-side fighting for the lead the first laps of
the contest. Bell darted to the front only three laps into the race as Cross
fell to ninth. Bell was able to lengthen his lead as Cross lost control and the
other drivers had to work around him. A battle for third ensued as Scott Styskal
(David City) tried to over take Shane Stutzman (Milford) and accomplished it
after a three-lap duel. A yellow flag appeared allowing everyone to catch Bell
with a restart. Jeremy Rasmussen (Bentonville, AR) took over second to contend
for first. Bell went high in the turns and Rasmussen went low but Bell
maintained the lead. Rasmussen and Bell were parallel the entire last lap as a
photo finish occurred. To the eye, it was a tie but the computer had Bell
pulling off his second feature win in a row by a hair.
In the Late Models, Travis Dickes (Madison) took the lead as Mike Marushak
(David City) and Alex Humphrey (Giltner) competed for second. Dickes built a
large lead as others moved positions. Chad Humston (Giltner) moved his way up
from the fourth row to third as he attempted to catch the leaders. It was a
clean and steady race as Dickes kept the lead the entire race followed by
Marushak and Humston.
The night ended with the Two-Man Crusiers since they were available to the fans
under the grandstands before the race started. The Ekeler & Miller team (Exeter)
quickly took the lead. A car spun around causing Miller & Slezak (Exeter) to go
into the wall and flip over. Thankfully, all were safe and the race continued
several minutes later. Ekeler & Miller continued at the front despite some
cautions. The Jacobitz team (Nelson) and ? finished second and third
respectively.
Mark your calendars, as the month of July is busy at JMS. The 24th and 25th has
the Midgets coming to the track with motorcycles arriving on the 27th. Of
course, the normal races will occur on the 28th.
