Murray, Chrisman, Klockman, Herbst Hit Jackpot at Lincoln
County Raceway
By Darin Racek
NORTH PLATTE, NE (July 7) - Races were held on July 7 at Lincoln County Raceway
in North Platte, and many people thought the luck was with them on this seventh
day of the seventh month of the year ‘07. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan.,
Todd Chrisman and Jeremy Herbst of North Platte, and Shane Klockman of Ogallala
were the ones that hit the jackpot that night.
The IMCA Modified A Feature had a scary scene on lap four of the race. D. J.
Pedersen of Brady shot his car off of corner one and rolled one-and-a-half
times. He did everything he had to do to avoid injury and did so. Robby Haines
of Benkelman was leading at the time, earning the lead using both the low and
high lines to get there. David Murray, Jr. was also using various lines to work
his way forward, and on lap nine, got by Haines. He stayed out in front for his
fourth Lincoln County Raceway win of the year and his 20th IMCA Modified Feature
win this year, in what he thinks has been 35 starts. Haines held onto second
place. On the last lap, Andrew Dillenburg snuck around fellow North Platte
driver Ronnie Wallace for third place. Jeremy Herbst rounded out the top five.
Haines, Murray, and Herbst were heat race winners. Murray also won the cash
dash.
Jeremy Herbst did double duty, running his Mini Sprint as well as a Modified.
The Mini Sprints had a terrible time getting started, as it took four times to
get one lap in. Fortunately, fourth time was a charm, and they finished the race
without another stoppage. Herbst started on the front row alongside J. R. Way of
Lexington and disappeared when the race finally started. Josh Sabin of North
Platte worked his way into second place, but ran out of time to catch Herbst,
who was also the heat race winner. Way finished in third place, while John
Webster of North Platte was the last driver to finish the race.
The IMCA Stock Car A Feature had several surprises for everyone. Charley Brown
of Maxwell, another double duty driver, took the lead on the opening lap of the
race. Mikey Dancer of North Platte, who spent ample time after his honeymoon
working on his racecar, appeared to be ready to pay off for that hard work as he
took the lead from Brown on lap six. He maintained the top spot until Todd
Chrisman finished working his way from row six and worked his way by Dancer on
lap eleven. Dancer’s car gave up the ghost with four laps to go, handing second
over to Justin Bussell of Imperial, who also started on row six. Bussell came
charging, but Chrisman was determined to drive on for his fourth track win in
five tries this season. A bunch of drivers that needed good finishes had them,
including third place Kent Lower, fourth place Kerry Jones, and fifth place Adam
Kackmeister, all of North Platte. Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood joined Chrisman
and Dancer as IMCA Stock Car heat race winners that night.
Shane Klockman opened the IMCA Hobby Stock main event with the lead. The race
slowed after Tyler Blake of North Platte played pinball, bouncing his car off of
the stopped car of Joe Thiem, also of North Platte, and into Wray, Colo. driver
John Groshans. After that mess was cleaned up, Austin Davis of Benkelman began
working on fellow heat race winner Klockman for the lead. Klockman spun while
leading on lap eight and handed the lead over to Davis. Fortunately for him,
Eric Piquet of North Platte spun in a separate incident, bringing out the
caution before another lap was completed. Klockman learned from his mistake and
kept his car straight while leading. He held on for his first IMCA Hobby Stock
win of the year. Davis finished in second place, ahead of Miles White of North
Platte, Derek Thiem of Columbus, and Michael Brunswig of Benkelman.
Lincoln County Raceway will be back in action on Saturday, July 14. The gates
open at 5 p. m., and the races will start at 7 p. m., Central Time. The Late
Models will join the five regular classes that night.
