Friday The 13th Covers McCook Speedway with Rain
By Darin Racek
McCOOK, NE. (July 13) - One-and-a-half heat races short of a complete show, the
skies opened up over McCook Speedway and dumped substantial rain, forcing
promoter Chuck Grey to cancel the show. The show will be rescheduled for a date
to be determined. McCook Speedway patrons who purchased admission tickets and
50/50 raffle tickets on July 13 need to hang on to their ticket stubs, as those
admission tickets will be their rain check for the rescheduled show, and the
50/50 tickets will be drawn then. The tickets will not be good for the July 26
fair race or the August 18 show.
Before the races started, McCook Speedway held a memorial for IMCA Stock Car
driver Brady Koch, who was killed in a motor vehicle accident on Wednesday. The
IMCA Stock Car drivers came out onto the track with their cars in the missing
man formation, with the pole spot open for Brady. They carried U. S. flags and
an IMCA flag with them as they paraded around the track. After they stopped on
the front stretch, drivers and pit crews from other classes walked out onto the
track for a brief memorial and moment of silence. When the IMCA Stock Car heat
races came out, Dean Kester, builder of the predator chassis race car Koch
drove, drove Brady’s car in front of the field for one more time around. Brady
Koch’s funeral service will be on Monday, July 16, at the McCook Christian
Church at 10 AM, Central Time.
The next race at McCook Speedway will be Thursday night, July 26. It is the Red
Willow County Fair race, and the classes will run for extra money. The IMCA
Modifieds run for $700 to win and $75 to start the A, IMCA Stock Cars $500 to
win and $75 to start, IMCA Hobby Stocks $200 to win and $50 to start the A, and
Classic Modifieds $150 to win and $50 to start the main event. The gates will
open at 5:30, with racing starting at 7:30 PM, Central Time. Grandstand
admission will be $10 for adults, $5 for children 6 - 12, and free for children
under 6.
