George Brothers Crown “King of the Hill” at JMS
By Scott & Rebekah Onnen
McCOOL, NE (Aug 4) - A large crowd gathered at the 3/8-mile track of Junction
Motor Speedway to enjoy an action packed night of dirt racing. George Brothers
Propane and Fertilizer, of Sutton, Nebraska, sponsored the King of the Hill
contest between the Late Model cars. The drivers put on an impressive show with
side by side driving and top speeds. Some exciting story lines developed as JMS
regulars Travis Dickes and Chad Humston mixed it up with the big engines of the
NCRA and MLRA Late Models.
The Hobby Stocks started the night of Feature races with a clean exhibition.
Shane Schneider (York) piloted the 15x to the front of the pack and lengthened
his lead. Jeff Timmermans (Grafton) was close behind in second until Jason
Wilkinson (Neligh) pulled up from the fourth row. He captured the second
position after a smooth move coming out of a turn. Everybody stayed in their
places, so the line up at the checkered flag was Schneider, Wilkinson and
Timmermans.
Each week the competition is strong during the Street Stocks. This night was no
exception with lead changes and some bumping taking place. Jason Van Winkle
(Grand Island) took the early lead, but Mel Franz (Henderson) found his groove
on the high side of the track and quickly grabbed it away. Wilkinson, Franz and
Andy Wilkinson (York) dove into a corner three-wide. Jason Wilkinson came past
the flag stand in the lead, but not for long, as his cousin, Andy, caught him
and passed him on the back straightaway. As Andy Wilkinson put some distance
between himself and the pack, Brent Drohman (Deshler) captured second for a
moment to give it back to J. Wilkinson. Ben Stuhr (Albion) worked his way from
the fifth row to finish third in front of Drohman.
The Late Models came on the track and paraded past the grandstands filled with
the waving crowd. A field of 18 cars raced in the feature after starting with 32
in the heat races. Kelly Boen (Henderson, CO) had the lead from the pole and
extended his lead with every lap. The #02, driven by John Anderson (Omaha, NE)
kept trying to reel him in to no avail. Travis Dickes (Norfolk, NE) moved up
from fifth to third with some skilled driving. Chad Humston (Giltner, NE) was
able to finish fifth in the large field of cars. Boen was crowned “King of the
Hill” of JMS with an official crown, robe and scepter.
In the final race of the night, the Modifieds took to the track with a full
field of 19 cars. Josh Hessheimer (Crete) started with the lead and held off
challenges from Jeremiah Sillman (Murdock) and Dean Wilkinson (Oakdale). After a
couple of crashes and restarts, Hessheimer kept the lead a little longer before
giving it up to Wilkinson. After another crash and restart, Mike Stearns (Rising
City) popped his head into second place. Jason Friesen (Sutton) spun out
maneuvering around some debris with 12 laps left. From the back of the pack
where Friesen restarted, it was easy to see there was a superior car on the
track. Friesen made his way back to the front, and Dean Wilkinson found himself
side by side with Friesen. The two crossed the flag stand together, but Friesen
soon seized the lead. Friesen finished with the victory with Stearns and
Wilkinson sealing up second and third.
Join us this next week on Tuesday & Wednesday for State Championship races with
the standard weekly program on Saturday (the 11th).
