JMS Fans Fell Appreciated at Junction Motor Speedway
McCOOL JUNCTION, NE (Aug 25) - Many items were given away Saturday at
Junction Motor Speedway during the Friesen Chevrolet GM Accessories and Parts
night. Virtually any pause in the action meant another hat, coat, poster or polo
shirt was given to the excited crowd. Saturday night there was even a wedding
party on the track to begin the entertainment and many birthdays and
anniversaries celebrated through announcements over the loud speaker.
Of course, while this was going on, the Four Cylinders took to the track. Sam
Wiarda (Aurora) took the control of the Quad Rods until Alex Koehler (Saronville)
took it away four laps into the race. Koehler extended his lead during the very
clean contest. No one ever challenged him for the lead, so Koehler claimed the
victory with Wiarda and Chuck Wergin (Milford) a distance off the pace. Chuck
Wergin (Milford) is the points leader in this class with Troy Hufmann (Sutton)
in second, Sam Wiarda (Aurora) in third, Ryan Pedersen (Sutton) in fourth and
Andy Sole (Nelson) in fifth.
Andy Wilkinson, # 15 (York), took the early lead from Randy Weaver (Hastings) in
the Street Stock competition. Everyone else had to try and catch Wilkinson as he
pulled away from the pack. Bryon Boersen (Grand Island) went side-by-side with
Weaver at the same time Jason Wilkinson (Neligh) and Jason Van Winkle (Grand
Island) raced a car length behind in the same tangle. Mel Franz (Henderson) made
his way from the back of the pack to fourth. On the last lap in the last corner,
with five Feature wins in a row on the line, Andy Wilkinson spun out to avoid a
swerving car. With a restart, the #15 was able to claim the victory in two laps
with Boersen, Jason Wilkinson and Van Winkle following. Point leaders in this
class 1 to 5 are, 1st, Andy Wilkinson (York), 2nd, Jason Wilkinson (Neligh),
3rd, Shane Stutzman (Milford) 4th, Mel Franz (Henderson) and 5th Brent Drohman
(Deshler).
Hobby Stocks dashed onto the track with Shane Schneider (York), Brent Kassik
(Milligan), Jesse Sobbing (Glenwood, IA) and Jason Wilkinson (Neligh) all
battling for first. Sobbing was a newcomer to JMS and made quite an impression
after only one night. The contest for first continued, despite a caution,
between Schneider, Sobbing, and Kassik. Sobbing went low on Schneider and took
over the lead with two laps remaining. He held on for the win as Schneider had
to settle with second followed by the driver of the week, Brent Kassik. Brent
Kassik (Milligan) holds the lead in the Hobby Stocks with Jason Wilkinson
(Neligh) a close second, Jerod Timmermans (Grafton) in third, Brandon Wergin
(Milford) in fourth and Jeff Timmermans (Grafton) in fifth.
The Modified division had 21 cars begin the contest that only a few would
survive. A terrific crash took place in the back straight a way on lap one. Mike
Johnson (Council Bluffs) had his car flip several times in the air causing the
red flag to come out to clear four entangled cars. Thankfully, everyone walked
away from the scene. Mike Densberger (Malcolm) took the early lead after the
restart. Then the front position went to Josh Hessheimer (Crete) with last
week’s Feature winner, Dusty Blake (Belvidere, KS), on his tail. It looked as
though Blake had his steering column break and had to leave the race. Now the
contest for first was between Hessheimer, Lonnie Veteto (Belleville) and Sean
Burklund (Ceresco). Burklund and Hessheimer went side-by-side before another
caution flew. Burklund seized the lead after one lap but coasted to the inside
of the track with technical difficulty. He gave the lead back to Hessheimer, who
was the eventual winner. Justin Bell (Omaha) moved from last place up to fourth.
The final lineup was Hessheimer, Dean Wilkinson (Oakdale), Dave Anson (Albion)
and Bell. The points leaders in the Modified Division are, Dean Wilkinson
(Oakdale) in first, Justin Bell (Omaha) 2nd, third Shane Stutzman (Milford), 4th
Wade Cross (Phillips) and Scott Styskal (David City fifth.
The Two-man Cruisers took over the dirt and the #14 of Edd Huxoll & Steve Cordis
(Sutton) took the lead after two cautions only two laps into the race. John
Miller (Exeter) & Andy Wilkinson gave chase to Ken & Drew Barry (Superior) for
second. The Barry's lost a tire with only two laps to go leaving the door open
for Miller & Wilkinson to make a run at the leaders. The closest finish of the
night came in the final turns when the Miller & Wilkinson dropped down to the
low side of the track. They brought up their car side-by-side with the #14. Both
sets of drivers crossed the line simultaneously, but Huxoll & Cordis did just
enough to hold onto the win. The team from Nelson, Vic and Josh Jacobitz are in
the lead in this division with Dustin Nunnenkamp and Austin Carlson (Sutton,
Saronville) in second. Stacey Orlando, Brent Hager (Henderson, Benedict) are in
third, with John & Steve Verba (Grand Island) in fourth. Rounding out the top
five are Ken and Drew Barry of Superior.
Ron Dake (Lincoln) jumped out to a big lead in the NAPA Late Models as Beau
Sheffield (Papillion), Don Smith Jr. (Norfolk) and Robbie Anderson (Blair)
pursued and tried to reel him in. A restart allowed the 1X of Bo Egge (Kearney)
to take over the lead from Dake. Jon Bridges (Columbus) roared into the picture
and moved up to second from fourth place. Egge was never challenged crossing the
line first, with Bridges, Alex Humphrey (Giltner), Dake, And Tom Svoboda (David
City) rounding out the top five. The NAPA Late Model Class is very close, John
brides (Columbus) is in first, Robbie Andersen (Blair), second, Don Smith, Jr
(Norfolk) third, Mike Marushak (David city) fourth and Denton Buller (York) is
in firth.
Be sure to come out for the final night of races on September 1 at 7pm to see
some of the excitement for yourself. Anything can happen on the last points
night. Make sure you are there to see your favorite driver win his or her
division.
The Outlaw, Thunder in the Dirt, Truck and Tractor Pull rolls onto the track on
Friday August 31 at 7:00. Make sure you are there to see these impressive
machines do their best to pull the sled to the end. Many trucks and tractors are
coming as this is the night before they pull into the Nebraska State Fair.
See you at the Junction.
