Tubbs, Dancer, Pollmann, and Dolan Repeat at McCook Speedway By Darin Racek McCOOK, NE (May 16) - Many times, when a driver takes an A Feature victory, people usually ask if that driver can back it up with another win. At McCook Speedway on May 16, four drivers were able to do just that, back up their feature wins from April. Nick Tubbs of Colby, Kan., Mikey Dancer of North Platte, Max Pollmann of Trenton, and Dalton Dolan of Oberlin, Kan. were able to perform the feat. Austin Davis of Benkelman and Travis Bayne of Windsor, Colo. won the other two main events. The Colorado Mod Lites and the Outlaw Vintage Lites from Eastern Nebraska merged at McCook Speedway to bring the crowd action from twenty-one cars. The A Feature was a little hairy for the drivers, as the twenty lap A Feature ended up being cut in half after eight caution periods. Travis Bayne paced the entire race out front. Scott Naggatz of Carter Lake, Iowa and Brad Bayne of Ault, Colo. both started in row four, but managed second and third place finishes, respectively. Longmont, Colo. driver Chris Baker came from row six to finish in fourth place, and Duane Bayne of Nunn, Colo. made the biggest gain of the night, starting twentieth and finishing in fifth place. The three heat races were won by Andy Rogers of Akron, Colo. and Lincoln drivers Chick DeMoss and Rob Papstein. After having a little trouble getting the first lap in, the IMCA Modified drivers had no problem finishing the last nineteen. Heat winner Ronnie Wallace of McCook took the lead on lap two using the high line. Nick Tubbs, who started scratch, found his way to the front using the low line. He and Wallace swapped the lead at the start/finish line three times, and many more times in other parts of the track until Tubbs finally cleared him near the half way point. As Tubbs pulled away, Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colo. caught up to Wallace. Frenier earned second at the finish line, by a bumper. Brandon Hagan of McCook and his cousin Bryan Hagan of Culbertson rounded out the top five. John Huffman of McCook was the other heat race winner. It was a Burger King Challenge Series night for the IMCA Stock Car drivers, and extra cars came to try to earn points. Larry Pollmann of McCook paced the first few laps of the race. Cautions kept the field close to him, and on lap four, Mikey Dancer danced by for the lead, bringing as his partner Zach Schultz of North Platte. When the drivers caught lapped traffic, Schultz was able to take the lead when Dancer chose the wrong way to get around the first car, but Mikey became the lead dancer again when Schultz was caught up behind Jason Bieker of McCook as his car began smoking heavily. Dancer would win the race, followed by Schultz. Lloyd Meeske of Champion, Pollmann, and Dave Plowman of Gretna rounded out the top five. Schultz, Pollmann, and Brandon Anderson of McCook won the heats. Heat winner Austin Davis took the lead of the IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature on lap two and never gave it away. Aaron Koch of Cambridge finished in second place for the second feature in a row. Richard Boon of Benkelman, heat winner Allen Wissmann of Bertrand, and Corey Cruzan of Maxwell were the other finishers in the top five. Alex Pollmann of Trenton tried to end his brother Max’s string of A Feature wins at McCook Speedway in the Classic Modifieds. Alex won his heat race, then paced the main event until he spun, handing the lead over to Imperial driver Billy Aeby. Max drove by him on lap four, and never looked back. Matt Matson of McCook finished in second place. Alex Pollmann regrouped to take third, ahead of Dan Rockwell of Culbertson and Aeby. The Mini-Truck A Feature went caution-free, and ended with two trucks coming across the finish line virtually side-by-side. Mitch Hamilton of McCook tried to hold Dalton Dolan off at the finish line for his first ever win, but came up less than six inches from the feat. Royal Fisher of Oberlin, Kan. viewed the race from third place, while Alex Silos and Delbert Ridenour rounded out the top five. McCook Speedway will be back in action on Friday night, May 23. The races
will start at 8 PM, Central Time. |
