Exciting Finishes Plenty at McCook Speedway
By Darin Racek

McCook, Nebraska (May 30) - The races at McCook Speedway on May 30 will be best known for the close finishes in most of the five main events. It will also be remembered for the fans raising over $300 in cash and toys for the McCook Toy Box, a local charity that gives toys to needy children at Christmas. Jay Steffens of North Platte, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, Aaron Koch of Cambridge, Matt Matson of McCook, and Dalton Dolan of Oberlin, Ks. Will be remembered as the night’s A Feature winners.

The race for the lead early in the IMCA Modified A Feature between Nick Tubbs of Colby, Ks. and Ronnie Wallace of McCook had most people think it would be the race for the win. Tubbs took the lead on lap six and pulled away from the field, while it looked and sounded as though Wallace began having engine troubles. A silent mover through the field was Jay Steffens, who started back in tenth place. With four laps to go, McCook’s John Huffman spun out, bunching up the field, and putting Steffens directly on Tubbs’s back bumper. The real race to the victory was about to begin. Steffens used the high line through corners three and four to take the lead on the next lap. However, Tubbs would regain the lead out of corner two. This happened for the next four laps. On the last lap, when it appeared Tubbs had Steffens cleared again on the backstretch, Steffens again shoved it up high and beat Tubbs to the start/finish line by half a car length. Fort Morgan, Colo. driver Jeremy Frenier finished in third place, with Brandon Hagan of McCook and Wallace rounding out the top five. Wallace and McCook’s Don Hagan, Jr. were the winners of the two heat races.

The IMCA Stock Car A Feature was slowed by six caution periods, five of those being one car incidents. Brandon Anderson of McCook, a heat race winner, grabbed the lead at the start of the race. Unfortunately for him, the cautions kept everyone close to him, forcing him to drive more defensively than offensively. Casey Werkmeister was a beneficiary during the cautions, as they, and his car. helped him move forward from his row five starting spot. Werkmeister took the lead on lap nine from Anderson and was never confronted for the next eleven laps. Heat race winner Lloyd Meeske of Champion was the closest contender, finishing in second place. Shane Stout bested fellow North Platte driver Zach Schultz for third place. Larry Pollmann of McCook earned a top five finish.

The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature was stopped for a few minutes after Greg Hoing of Johnson Lake rolled his car off of corner one on lap seven. He was not injured. When racing resumed, heat race victor Leland Stute of Benkelman continued his dominance of the race. He was unaware Aaron Koch was sneaking up on him on the high line. Koch about took the lead taking the white flag, as the two went across the scoring line nearly side-by-side. On the next lap around, Koch had a fender advantage as he took his first win of the year. Stute was followed by Corey Cruzan of Maxwell, Austin Davis of Benkelman, and Richard Boon of Benkelman.

The win in the Classic Modified A Feature came down to Matt Matson and Trenton’s Max Pollmann. Pollmann had won the three previous races, but Matson had the lead with one lap to go, and was determined to stay out front. His determination paid off, as he was able to have about a car length of separation between his car and Pollmann’s at the finish line. Alex Pollmann of Trenton was credited with third place, and Culbertson driver Dan Rockwell with fourth place.

Dalton Dolan earned his fourth straight A Feature win in the Mini-Truck class. Although he took the lead from Alex Silos of North Platte on lap six, he was not out of the woods. Mitch Hamilton of McCook came with him, and at times was looking for a way around the Kansas driver. Getting around the slower traffic proved to be the key to victory, and Dolan was able to get by slower trucks a little quicker than Hamilton. Silos held on for third place at the finish. Delbert Ridenour of Culbertson and Jake Sahm of McCook also earned top five finishes in the race.

Culbertson Speedway will be back in action on June 6, giving McCook Speedway the week off. McCook Speedway will be back in action on Friday night, June 13. The United Rebel Sprint Series will make a visit, and will take center stage for the night. The three IMCA classes will run as well, with the Classics and Trucks getting a night off. The gates open at 6 PM, and the races will start at 8 PM, Central Time.
