Osborn Breaks into Win Column By Darin Racek LEXINGTON, NE, (June 1) - The threat of rain prompted Dawson County Raceway officials to limit the night to heat races and A Features, despite having over 22 cars in each class. After a wild night of racing on the fast 3/8-mile track, Chad Dolan of Gibbon, Colton Osborn of Cozad, and Aaron Koch of Cambridge survived the big fields to win the night’s A Features. After four attempts to get the first lap of the IMCA Modified A in, Charley Brown of Maxwell found his way to the front. He was heavily pressured by fellow heat race winner Chad Dolan and Jay Steffens of North Platte. On lap eight, Dolan finally worked his way underneath Brown to take command of the race. He pulled out to a big lead until a caution period with five laps to go bunched up the field. Despite that, he again pulled away and took the win. Brown and Steffens remained in second and third places. Heat winner Gary Kline of Norton, Ks. spun early and started in the back of the field, but came through the field to finish in fourth place. Lexington’s Vince Leibert finished in fifth place. A major accident occurred during lap twelve of the IMCA Stock Car A Feature. North Platte driver Travis Tilford hit the wall hard, and went for a ride. The car came back across the track, collecting Kerry Jones of North Platte. Tilford’s car spun and started to roll when it was hit on the undercarriage by the car of Hanny Arram of Kearney, who was trying to miss the wreck. Bob Hoing of Overton tried to avoid Arram, hit the wall, rolled several times, and waited for his car to rest on the front stretch fence. Despite the carnage, all of the drivers were able to get out of their cars under their own power. At the start of the race, is was again Charley Brown, driving in two classes for the night, pacing the way. Heat race winner Colton Osborn stayed right with him, and actually looked as though he had the car that could lead. On lap seven, Osborn found a way around the man who helped build his Dirt Boss chassis. After the big wreck, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood found himself in second place, and one of the hottest drivers of late applied the screws to Osborn. Despite getting in the marbles with a couple of laps to go, Colton remained calm, and held off Werkmeister to gain his first ever A Feature win. Shane Stout of North Platte finished in third place. Mikey Dancer of North Platte and Dan Walker of Eddyville rounded out the top five. The other two IMCA Stock Car heats were won by Jason Smidt of Minden and Jeff Whiting of Gothenburg. The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature had some great racing out in the front of the field. After Blue Hill racer Jim Buss took the lead from Broken Bow’s Ethan Johnson, some people might have thought the race was over. However, Aaron Koch and his car found the high groove to his liking, and near the half way point, drove on by. Kyle Bond of Gibbon joined in on the fun up front, making it a three car battle. As Bond and Buss began to swap second place nearly every lap, Koch found the breathing room he needed to pull away for the A Feature victory. Buss did win the battle for second place over Bond. Cody Blessing of Kearney and Branden Stange of Cairo rounded out the top five. Koch, Buss, and Brandon Nelson of Grand Island took the wins in the heat races. Dawson County Raceway will take next week off, then be back in action on
June 15, when the United Rebel Sprint Series comes to town. They will join
the three IMCA classes for a special night of racing. The gates will open
that night at 5 PM, and the races will start at 7 PM. Grandstand admission
