Murray, Brown, and Buss Win “The Money“ on a Night of 100 Cars By Darin Racek NORTH PLATTE, Ne (June 17) - Lincoln County Raceway in North Platte held the 3rd Annual Run For The Money, sponsored by Nebraskaland National Bank on June 17, and the pits literally overflowed with an even 100 cars in the three classes. Besides an added purse, the IMCA Modified class was pumped up by the Blood, Sweat, and Tears IMCA Modified touring series to 45 cars, five new IMCA Stock Cars brought that count up to 32 cars, and the IMCA Hobby Stock set a new track best at 23 cars. At the end of the night, David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas, Charley Brown of Maxwell, and Jim Buss of Blue Hill ran for the most money, as they won the three big A Features. Sprinkles fell at the start of the twenty-five lap IMCA Modified A Feature. Matt Brack of Mead, Colorado beat fellow heat winner Jason Schoenberger of Gorham, Kansas to the punch, taking the lead of the race at the beginning. It only took two laps for David Murray to move from the third row to the front. After Murray, another of the four heat winners, took the lead, Brack, Schoenberger, and Ronnie Wallace of McCook battled for a bit. Chris Bragg of Springtown, Texas would eventually get in the mix as well. Matt Brack cleared himself of the other two and just tried to follow Murray, as long as he could see him. The lone caution on lap fourteen, after Delbert Smith of Wichita, Kansas broke down, helped Brack catch up. However, at the finish, Murray again had an enormous lead. Brack did hold onto second place. Schoenberger had fallen back to fifth for a bit, but the moisture from the sprinkles made the top line of the track a little more sticky, and he moved up to third place in the last two laps. Wallace finished in fourth place. Will Brack of Mead, Colorado started in row nine and found himself in fifth place at the completion of the race, only ten minutes before the skies let loose. Kyle Clough of Wallace was the other BST IMCA Modified heat race winner. The two B Features were won by Charley Brown of Maxwell and Delbert Smith. B Feature wins are only good for helping you qualify for an A Feature, but an A Feature win gets you the most points and money. That’s why Charley Brown enjoyed his IMCA Stock Car win more than his Modified B Feature victory. Lloyd Meeske of Champion, who has started in the middle of the field before and come off with good finishes in North Platte, used the luck of the draw to earn the pole and drive off with the first lead of the Stock Car main event. Although pulling out to a five car-length lead, Charley Brown slowly reeled him in. In the middle part of the race, Brown began to get along the side of Meeske’s car, and Meeske would be able to hold him off. The first caution on lap thirteen gave the rest of the field to catch back up to those two, and possibly got Meeske out of his groove. Within three laps, Charley was able to get far enough under Lloyd to get him a run in the corner two take command. Charley would lead the final nine laps en route to victory. There was very good racing behind the front two drivers, as Casey Werkmeister of Maywood and Shane Stout of North Platte had their own battle for third, which Casey was able to win. Zach Schultz of North Platte, a heat winner, rounded out the top five. Mikey Dancer of North Platte was the other heat race winner. Stewart Holmes of North Platte manage to earn himself a B Feature win in the Stock Cars. North Platte’s Travis Tilford won the other B Feature, then passed Holmes on the last of the cash dash to earn that money. The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature was a very clean race, had some very good racing throughout the field, and had all but one of the starters complete the race. The man on the move early was Shane Hiatt of Rising City. He was the first heat race winner of the night, and immediately went to the head of the pack. Fans visiting from Lexington and Doniphan saw a familiar battle behind him, as heat winners Kyle Bond of Kearney and Jim Buss challenged each other to see who might try to race Hiatt. After Buss had cleared himself of Bond, he made up the real estate to Hiatt and claimed it for his own. As Buss drove off for his third consecutive “Run For The Money” win, Bond, Hiatt, Michael Woodhead of Holyoke, Colorado, and Dan Morash of North Platte were challenging each other for second place. Hiatt got back by Bond and away from the others to finish in second place. Hans Houfek of Emerson was a late arrival to the multi-car battle, but let them know he was there when he passed most of them and finished in third place. Bond and Woodhead finished fourth and fifth places. Jack Sherman of Kearney blew away the rest of the field in the Hobby Stock B Feature. Lincoln County Raceway will take this weekend off, but will be back in action on Saturday night, June 28, starting at 7 PM, Central Time. The Mini-Sprints will be back that night to race on their track, and the regular IMCA-sanctioned classes will be there as well.
