Storms Miss McCook, Thunder on The Plains Completed June 21 By Darin Racek McCOOK, NE (June 21) - Before the races at McCook Speedway June 21, a storm passed just east of town, dropping over two inches of rain in places. A few sprinkles hit the track, but not enough to stop the racing. In fact, once the storm passed by, the sun came out, and the fans had a pleasant night to enjoy the final night of “Thunder on The Plains”. Nick Tubbs of Colby, Kan., Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood, Aaron Koch of Cambridge, Devin Allen and Duke Ebert of Culbertson, and Royal Fisher of Oberlin, Kan. were glad the storm went by, as they were able to pick up A Feature wins. The storm must have scared off some out-of-town IMCA Modified drivers, as the pursed was increased for the night to pay $750 to win, and the field was light on cars. It was not light on talent. Brandon Hagan of McCook jumped to the lead of the A Feature, and tried to run away and hide. Nick Tubbs, the winner on the previous night, caught up to Hagan and began to look for a way around him. Tubbs opted to run the low line, different than the night before. On the tenth lap, he was able to get underneath Hagan in corner two, take the lead, and showed Hagan and the rest of the field the way to the checkered flag. Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colo. finished in third place, ahead of Ronnie Wallace of North Platte, and cash dash winner Jeff Meeker of Northglenn, Colo. Todd Hartley of Maywood earned the IMCA Modified heat race win. The IMCA Stock Cars put on a spirited battle in their main event. Jason Koch of Cambridge one of the heat winners for the Stocks, jumped out front, staying ahead of several battles for position. Kyle Werkmeister battled his way up to Koch, who began having troubles with his car pushing in corner one. On the tenth lap, Werkmeister drove underneath Koch in the corner to inherit the lead. Gretna racer Dave Plowman followed, and took his own turn at the lead two laps later. Werkmeister would settle down, take the top spot back two laps after that, and did not share the spot after that. Plowman held Zach Schultz of North Platte off for second place. Heat winner Shane Stout of North Platte earned fourth place, while Casey Werkmeister finished fifth. Everyone in the IMCA Hobby Stock class had sights set on taking the win,
and it showed in the racing. Maxwell driver Corey Cruzan jumped to the lead
on lap one, only to hand it over to fellow heat race winner Allen Wissmann
of Bertrand after Cruzan spun on his own. Wissmann was celebrating a
birthday, and thinking about icing his cake with the A Feature paycheck.
With two laps to go, Aaron Koch blew out Wissmann’s candles as he drove by
on his way to the win. Wissmann was followed at the finish line by Cody
DeWester of McCook, and Benkelman drivers Austin Davis and Richard Boon. Second time was a charm for Devin Allen. Allen brought out his Classic Modified the previous night for the first time this season and earned a second place finish. On this night, Allen would find a way by Max Pollmann of Trenton on lap five on his way of the heat race and A Feature sweep. Pollmann finished in second in both races. Rick Touslee of Oberlin, Kan. took home third place. Billy Aeby of Imperial and Alex Pollmann of Trenton rounded out the top five. The Mini-Truck A Feature had it’s share of craziness. Oberlin, Kan. driver Dalton Dolan rolled his truck on the second lap, bringing out the red flag. It appeared his night was over, and feature win streak in jeopardy. However, once the truck was able to be started, the heat race winner rejoined the field in the back. Royal Fisher paced the early part of the race, but had a challenge from Mitch Hamilton of McCook. Hamilton took the lead on lap four, then promptly drove his truck off of corner two. Fisher regained the lead, but the attack wasn’t yet finished. Dalton Dolan surprisingly worked his way through the field and caught Fisher on the last lap. Royal drove evasively, and was able to hold Dalton back for his first McCook Speedway feature win of the year. Dale Heyen made it an Oberlin sweep of the top three spots. Alex Silos of North Platte finished in fourth place, and Bud Wasson of Lebanon took fifth. McCook Speedway’s next race will be on Friday night, June 27, starting at
8 PM, Central Time. It will be Memorial Night, as the track will remember
some of the area racers who have passed away in recent memory. |
