Plowman Wins Close One at McCook Speedway By Darin Racek McCOOK, NE (June 27) - The June 27 race at McCook Speedway was known as the “Memorial Race”, as deceased members of the racing family of Southwest Nebraska were remembered during the night. Some money was donated in memory of these drivers, and that money was distributed to the top two drivers in each heat race, with the winners receiving $100, and second place finishers getting $50. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan., Dave Plowman of Gretna, Aaron Koch of Cambridge, Max Pollmann of Trenton, and Mitch Hamilton of McCook will be the drivers remembered for winning the A Features for the night. David Murray made his first appearance of the year at McCook Speedway count. After winning his heat race, Murray started in row five of the IMCA Modified A Feature. On lap eight, Murray found a way past Colby, Kan. driver Nick Tubbs, who was hoping to earn his fourth McCook Speedway feature win in a row. Murray pulled away for bit, only to have Tubbs reel him back in. The distance between the two finally stayed consistent, and Murray maintained that distance to the finish line. Heat winner Ronnie Wallace of McCook finished in third place, ahead of the father and son tandem of Don Hagan, Jr. and Brandon Hagan of McCook. The IMCA Stock Car A Feature had people on their feet until the end of the race. Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood got by Jason Koch of Cambridge on lap three to take the lead. A couple of laps later, Koch was involved in an accident including himself, Larry Pollmann of McCook, and Casey Werkmeister of Maywood. Pollmann and Werkmeister stayed out on the track. After the restart, Casey drove by Kyle for the top spot. Heat race winner Dave Plowman stayed in the top four all night, and made his move on lap sixteen, moving under Casey Werkmeister for the lead. Werkmeister maintained the high line, and took back the top spot with one lap to go. Plowman managed to stay side-by-side with him, then drove an excellent line through corner four to help him cross the finish line a bumper ahead of Werkmeister. Zach Schultz of North Platte watched the race from third place. Larry Pollmann came back to finish in fourth place, while Kyle Werkmeister finished in fifth place. Shane Stout of North Platte was the other heat winner for the IMCA Stock Cars. The IMCA Hobby Stocks put on a caution-free, fifteen-lap event. Heat winner Corey Cruzan of Maxwell passed Richard Boon on lap three for the lead, and set sights on his first A Feature win. The top five cars remained nose-to-tail and side-by-side for well over the first half of the race. Aaron Koch had to work the high line and low line to work up to Cruzan, then waited for the Maxwell driver to move down the track so he could take the high line to the lead with only three laps to go. Cruzan kept Koch in his sights, and even nearly pulled his car along the side of Koch’s once, but could not deny Koch his second win in a row. Boon finished in third place, while Austin Davis out-dueled fellow Benkelman driver Leland Stute to the line for fourth place. Max Pollmann again swept the Classic Modified heat race and A Feature wins. Billy Aeby of Imperial looped his car in the heat race, but kept it straight in the A Feature to finish in second place. Alex Pollmann of Trenton finished in third place, but blew the motor of his car at the end of the race. Mitch Hamilton finally broke through with his first ever Mini-Truck A Feature win. Hamilton was going to have to go through Alex Silos of North Platte to get it. A right front flat tire on Silos’s Truck on lap six sent him hard into the front stretch wall, creating a caution period and ending his night. Hamilton inherited the lead, but held off a hard-charging Royal Fisher of Oberlin, Kan. to sweep both races for the class. Dale Heyen of Oberlin, Kan. finished in third place, ahead of Dennis Wasson of Lebanon and Delbert Ridenour of Culbertson. The next night of racing in Southwest Nebraska will be Thursday night, July 3rd, at Culbertson Speedway, beginning at 8 PM, Central Time. McCook Speedway will be back in action on Friday night, July 18. The gates will open at 6 PM, and the races will start at 8 PM, Central Time.
