McCook Speedway Survives Weather By Darin Racek McCOOK, NE (August 15) - After three inches of rain fell in McCook early in the week, it looked as though the Ruth and Don Hagan, Sr. Memorial Night on August 15 might not go on at McCook Speedway. The biggest concern was the front stretch where the water runs off of the grandstand and onto the track. After some heavy-duty work on it, the races with off, nearly without a hitch. David Murray and Dalton Dolan of Oberlin, Kansas, Dave Plowman of Gretna, Richard Boon of Benkelman, Alex Pollmann of Trenton, and Justin Helgoth of Holyoke, Colorado did some heavy-duty driving in gaining the A Feature wins. As the night was Hagan Memorial Night, extra money was put in the purse in all of the features, and the top two in every heat race earned money, courtesy of the Hagan family. After the lone caution of the IMCA Modified A Feature on lap seven, David Murray got by fellow heat race winner John Huffman of McCook and drove to over a straightaway lead on the last thirteen laps on the way to his third consecutive victory at McCook Speedway. Robby Haines of Benkelman also got by Huffman, but spent the rest of the race working to keep Huffman back in third, a task he was able to accomplish. Don Hagan, Jr. and son Brandon Hagan, both of McCook, finished in fourth and fifth places. Every lap of the IMCA Stock Car A Feature was led by a #42 car. Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood, driving the #42W car, set the pace for the early part of the twenty lap event. Unfortunately for him, his car went around after lap six, creating a caution. That put the #P42 of Dave Plowman at the head of the field, and that is where the heat race winner remained for the rest of the event. Zach Schultz of North Platte won the competitive battle for second place, keeping the spot from Lloyd Meeske of Champion and Nick Tubbs of Colby, Kansas. Travis Tilford of North Platte came on late in the race to earn the fifth place position. Larry Pollmann of McCook was the other heat race winner. Richard Boon has been on a roll lately, taking his second consecutive IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature victory. After getting by heat race winner Leland Stute on the opening lap, Boon made himself hard to catch. Aaron Koch of Cambridge was plenty fast to close in on him, but never quite close enough to rattle the Benkelman driver. Allen Wissmann of Bertrand had a respectable third place finish, ahead of point leader Austin Davis of Benkelman and Stute. The drama was high in the Classic Modified A Feature. Alex Pollmann got ahead of Billy Aeby of Imperial at the start of the race to take the lead, and had his eyes set on winning his first ever A Feature. Something that aided him a bit was the competition behind him for second place between his brother Max Pollmann of Trenton and Rick Touslee of Oberlin, Kansas. Touslee’s line kept him in the position for several laps, but with about two laps to go, Max got by. Max, who had won six of the previous eight Classic Modified A Features and that night‘s heat race, went for lucky number seven. However, Alex had run a smooth, consistent race, and that also aided him enough room to run his race and never hear the engine of the other cars on the way to the win. Alex celebrated the occasion by taking a victory lap with the checkered flag. Max Pollmann and Rick Touslee were followed at the finish line by Loren Pollmann of Trenton (the father of Alex and Max), and Matt Matson of McCook. The battle for the Mini-Truck lead was a little too close for comfort on lap five between Dalton Dolan and Mitch Hamilton. The two tangled, bringing out a caution. Hamilton was relegated to the back of the field, and Dolan back out front. Hamilton did not stay there long, and was able to be back up to second place when the caution flag came out with two laps to go. That put his truck back on the tailgate of Dolan’s, but did not allow enough time for a serious charge to deny Dolan the victory. Birthday boy Alex Silos finished in third place, ahead of Delbert Ridenour of Culbertson, Bud Wasson of Lebanon, and the rest of the field. Flagman Mark Kinne took some time off to race in the SportMod race. While many feared the worst, he never spun out, and never came close to the wall. Justin Helgoth of Holyoke, Colorado, who is in his first season of the class, had a little bit better time of it. Helgoth has a little more experience than Mark driving, and has had more time dialing his car in than has the 5G Racing Team (which was out on the track for it’s first ever race). Helgoth won the race by five car lengths. August 22 will be Championship Night at McCook Speedway, meaning it will be the last night for drivers to improve their points positions and earn track championships. The races will start that night at 8 PM, Central Time. It was also announced a race date has been added to the McCook Speedway schedule. The United Rebel Sprint Series will be in town on Sunday afternoon, September 21. Support classes have not yet been determined.
