Drivers With Short Names Take Big Wins at Dawson County Raceway By Darin Racek LEXINGTON, NE (August 17) - Despite the length of the last race of the night, the races at Dawson County Raceway on August 17 went smooth and made for a short and sweet night of racing. Bo Egge and Kyle Bond of Kearney, and Jason Koch of Cambridge, all have relatively short, one-syllable last names, but they earned the sweet big checks by winning the A Features. The IMCA Modified A Feature was the last race of the night, and eight caution periods made the race drag out some. Toph Harmon of Arapahoe was showing the way around the track to the field until he spun on lap two. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg then took over, only to lost the spot to heat winner David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas. Despite the yellows, Murray would maintain a comfortable lead until he had to go to the pits with a flat tire during a caution on lap thirteen. He was able to rejoin the field in the back. Bo Egge was the new leader, and even he developed troubles near the end of the race, as the brakes on his car were giving out. That allowed Jay Steffens of North Platte to gain ground and make an exciting attempt for the win on the last corner of the last lap. However, Egge had enough momentum coming out of corner four to eke out the victory. Chuck Stryker of Eddyville finished in third place. Vince Leibert of Lexington narrowly edged out Murray for fourth. Chad Dolan of Gibbon and Charley Brown of Maxwell were the other two heat race winners. If it seems like brakes do not make a difference, ask IMCA Stock Car driver Jason Koch. Koch changed a rear brake caliper before the races and set his sights on his first ever IMCA Stock Car A Feature win. He took the lead at the start, and was closely followed by heat winner Charley Brown. After a caution on lap three, the field went seventeen caution-free laps. Brown stayed on Koch’s rear bumper, waiting for Koch’s car to push or for Jason to make a mistake. The brakes helped Koch turn through the corners more smoothly, and he maintained the lead to the finish. Brown finished in second place. Heat race winner Colton Osborn of Cozad came close a couple of time joining the battle for the lead, but had to settle for third place. Dan Walker of Eddyville finished in fourth, and Jim Hagan of Lexington rounded out the top five finishers. Despite rolling over in the IMCA Hobby Stock Cash Dash, heat race winner Frank Mladek jumped out to an early lead in the fifteen-lap A Feature. He eventually spun, handing the lead over to Brandon Kautz of Gibbon. Kautz has had only one top ten finish this year, but looked good leading the field. Cash dash winner Kyle Bond caught Kautz and followed him for a few laps, until he found his opening on lap eleven. Bond stayed out front for the final four laps for his third track A Feature win of the year. Kautz maintained his car to get improve his season best to second place. Greg Hoing of Johnson Lake stayed in the mix to take the third spot, ahead of Aaron Koch of Cambridge. Tim Miller of Grand Island was credited with fifth place, although he and Hunter Cantrall of Lexington went across the finish line nearly side-by-side. Cory Allen of Cozad and Jim Buss of Blue Hill won the other heat races. Sunday night, August 24, will be Championship Night at Dawson County
Raceway. All three classes will run for points, and the class champions will
be determined. August 24 will also have the championship race for the Burger
King Challenge 9 for 9 Series for the IMCA Stock Car class. The pits will
open at 5 PM, and the races will start at 7 PM, Central Time. |
