Championship Night at McCook Speedway Goes Smoothly By Darin Racek McCOOK, NE. (August 22) - Championship night at McCook Speedway went pretty smooth on August 22, as the races took a little over two hours to complete. The speed was aided by limited caution periods. David Murray of Oberlin, Kansas, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, Austin Davis of Benkelman, and McCook drivers Matt Matson and Mitch Hamilton were aided by their teams on their way to A Feature victories. At the end of the night Werkmeister and Hamilton, Nick Tubbs of Colby, Kansas, Aaron Koch of Cambridge, and Max Pollmann of Trenton were awarded the five track championships. After the races, many different people, including mechanics and track help, were allowed to run some hot laps in some of the race cars. The battle early on for the lead of the IMCA Modified A Feature was well-contested by Tim Plowman of Woodbine, Iowa, Don Hagan, Jr. of McCook, and heat winner John Huffman of McCook. Hagan used the low line to take the lead before a caution came out on lap seven. By then, heat winner David Murray had worked his into the top three. Murray had worked the high side to get to the position, but switched to the low side where his car worked better. He was able to work by Hagan on lap eleven and drive away for the win. Hagan ran well and maintained second spot, while Huffman took third. IMCA Modified track champion Nick Tubbs and Robby Haines of Benkelman rounded out the top five. Casey Werkmeister and North Platte driver Zach Schultz were tied for the IMCA Stock Car point lead going into the night’s main event. Schultz’s car overheated during the twenty lap, caution-free event, forcing him to end the night early. Werkmeister worked overtime tracking down his brother Kyle to take the lead on lap eight, and drove away to secure the win and points title. Kyle was followed at the line by Dave Plowman of Gretna, Larry Pollmann of McCook, and Ritchie Wickizer of Culbertson. The IMCA Stock Car heat race was won by Shane Stout of North Platte. The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature had a lot of action at the front of the pack. Heat race winner Corey Cruzan of Maxwell cruised out front for many laps, eventually overtaken by Allen Wissmann of Bertrand, who was running the high line. Eventual track champion Aaron Koch followed along into the second spot and applied pressure to the driver who is also the promoter at Dawson County Raceway. While many of the cars were up top and in the middle of the track, Austin Davis took a gamble and run the low line around the track. He got by Koch, and with four laps to go, made the winning pass on Wissmann. Richard Boon of Benkelman, the other heat winner, followed Davis down low, aiding him to a second place finish. Wissmann took home third place, ahead of Aaron Koch and McCook driver Cody DeWester. Chad Coleman of McCook paced the first lap of the Classic Modified main event, but Matt Matson snuck underneath him to take the lead on lap two. As Matson pulled out to a big lead, everyone else bunched up for a crazy battle for second place. Matson convincingly won the race. On the last lap, Coleman was tagged and spun out. After the races, he was credited with second place. The rest of the field was credited with finishes by how they finished the next to the last lap, which dropped track champion Max Pollmann from second to third place in the finish, ahead of brother Alex Pollmann and father Loren Pollmann. Billy Aeby of Imperial was the heat race winner. Mitch Hamilton just had to start the Mini-Truck A Feature to secure the points title, but he wanted to do more than that. He followed leader Alex Silos of North Platte until he could find a way around on lap five. Heat race winner Dalton Dolan of Oberlin, Kansas, soon joined in on the fun as well. He got by Silos only to watch Hamilton stretch his lead into the night’s A Feature win. Silos maintained third place at the finish, ahead of Dennis Wasson of Lebanon and Delbert Ridenour of Culbertson. Promoter Chuck Gray would like to thank the race fans, racers, sponsors,
and crew for being there at McCook Speedway for the 2008 racing season, and
hopes everyone can make it out for the United Rebel Sprint Series special at
McCook Speedway on September 21. |
