Blanford Takes URSS Race at McCook Speedway

By Darin Racek

McCOOK, NE (Sept 21) - The United Rebel Sprint Series made their second visit of the year to McCook Speedway Sunday afternoon, September 21. The Sprint Cars were also joined by SportMods and Hobby Stocks on the card. The warm weather, sunny skies, and high winds made track preparation difficult for the McCook Speedway officials, but they had it right come feature time. Sid Blanford of Vail, Colorado, Duke Ebert of Culbertson, and Richard Boon of Benkelman were the A Feature winners. After the races, track officials put on a race in the SportMods. That race was won by tech man Brent Riley over assistant flagman Dave Wimer and head flagman Mark Kinne.

Twenty URSS 305 Sprint Cars took to the track for the twenty lap A Feature. The race was not even a lap old when Taylor Velasquez of Turpin, Oklahoma rolled in corner four. As his car rolled, the car of Utica, Kansas driver Jon Johnson went up and over Velasquez’s car. To add to the confusion, Bill Hays of Edison rolled in corner two after contact when he, Willie Wynn of WaKeeney, Kansas, and Sid Blanford piled up in corner three. No drivers were injured in the crashes. Blanford, who came to Nebraska for the weekend without a pit crew, went to the pits. With aid from some crew members of other teams, he was able to fix the front wing and control arm in time to start the race in the back. Johnson and Wynn also made the restart. Johnson’s trouble continued, as the front end gave way on lap seven, forcing him to leave on the hook.

Pacing the race was fourteen year-old driver Taylor Milton of Fargo, Oklahoma. On lap seven, B Feature winner Kirby Hagans of LaCrosse, Kansas showed the youngster his best move and took the lead. Unfortunately for him, the caution came out, and had to line up back behind Milton. Milton learned the lesson, and kept the door shut on the restart. While most of the drivers were running the low line, Sid Blanford was driving a higher groove and moving through the field. With nine laps to go, he had moved into fourth place. He was in third after a caution on lap fourteen. After getting by heat winner Jason Martin of Liberal, Kansas, he stayed his coursed, snuck by Milton with three laps to go, and finished it off by leading at the checkered flag. Milton held Martin off for second place. Hagans finished in fourth. The other heat race earlier in the day was won by Craig Jecha of Timkin, Kansas.

Austin Davis of Benkelman must have thought the high line was the way to go in the Hobby Stock A Feature as well, because he used it to take the lead on the opening lap and stayed up there. That kept the bottom line open for Richard Boon, who caught heat winner Davis, passed him at the half way point, and earning him the win. Davis settled for second place, while Justin Wagner of Kearney, in his first race of the year, taking the third spot.

Don Hagan, Jr. of McCook drove his brother Bruce’s SportMod for the Sunday show, and looked good early. After winning the heat, he paced the first six laps and had a huge lead on Duke Ebert when he spun. The “Duke of Culbertson” drove on by. Hagan regained much of the ground, but ran out of time. Suzanne Way of North Platte was credited with third place, and Justin Helgoth of Holyoke, Colorado is recognized for fourth place.
