McCook Speedway/Culbertson Speedway Ready For 2009 Season
by Darin Racek

CULBERTSON, NE (Feb 18) - McCook Speedway will be back in action for the 2009 season, with Chuck Gray as the promoter for the fourth consecutive year. Because of the retirement of Jim Lewis at Culbertson Speedway, Gray will promote two races at that track, with those points counting as McCook Speedway points. The two races at the high-banked 3/8-mile track in Culbertson will be on Friday, July 3, and Friday, August 7. The night of August 7 will be the Hitchcock County fair races. The 7th annual Don and Ruth Hagan, Sr. Memorial races will be held that night as well.

McCook Speedway will kick off the racing season on the action-sized 3/8-mile dirt track on Friday, April 17. The Modified, Stock Car, and Hobby Stock classes, all sanctioned by the International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) will again be the premier classes. The specs for these classes may be viewed at www.imca.com . The SportMod class will run it's first full season, in hopes of becoming IMCA-sanctioned for 2010. The class rules will primarily follow IMCA Northern SportMod rules, with some possible modifications. Contact Chuck Gray with questions. The Classic Modified division will crown it's final track champion, as the class will be phased out after this year.

Among some of the activities this year will include the two-night Thunder on The Plains on Friday and Saturday, June 19 and 20. The United Rebel Sprint Series (URSS) will make two visits this year with the 305 Sprint Cars, first on June 12, and then on August 21. McCook Speedway's Racer Memorial Night will be on July 10. Championship night will be on Friday night, August 22. The Mod Lites of Colorado are expected to visit once during the 2009 season, but the date has yet to be determined. The Red Willow County Fair race will be on Thursday night, July 30. That race will be run by the Red Willow County Fairboard, and all classes, times, and ticket prices for that night are yet to be determined.

The gates will open each racing Friday night at 6 PM Central Time, with the races starting at 8 PM Central Time. The Saturday, June 20 show will start at 7 PM Central Time, with the gates opening at 5 PM. With the possible exceptions of the fair races at both McCook and Culbertson, admission will be $10.00 for adults and free for children 5 and under. Admission for children ages 6 - 12 is $5.00, but one child will be free with one paid adult admission. For example, an adult couple with three children 6 - 12 will pay for two adult passes and one child's pass. Pit passes are $20.00.

McCook Speedway is on the Red Willow County Fairgrounds in the northwestern region of McCook, on the corner of 5th Street West and “Q” Street. Culbertson Speedway is on the Hitchcock County Fairgrounds on the east side of Culbertson, 0.3 mile south of US Highway 6 and 34 on Railroad Street. The two tracks are approximately 12 miles apart. For more information, contact Chuck Gray at 308-350-1811, or write to McCook Speedway, P. O. Box 1183, McCook, Nebraska 69001-1183.
