LEXINGTON, NE (April 26) - The season opener at Dawson County Raceway saw fans eager to watch the 68 competitors from five states to compete in the three classes. The three A Features were divided by winners from three different states, as Chad Dolan of Gibbon, Nebraska, Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, and Jeromy Wagner of Kensington, Kansas took those victories. Heat race winner Chad Dolan drew the front row of the IMCA Modified A Feature, and when the green flag was waved, Dolan took off. Two early cautions in the first five laps kept the field close, but as the last fifteen laps went caution-free, Dolan amassed a ¾-straightaway lead on second place Jay Steffens of North Platte on the way to the opening night victory. Jordan Grabouski of Beatrice had to start back in the sixth row, yet drove his way to third place at the finish. Jim Mlady of North Platte and heat winner Charley Brown of Maxwell rounded out the top five. The other two IMCA Modified heat races were won by McCook drivers Ronnie Wallace and John Huffman. Charles Stryker of Eddyville won a wild B Feature marred by a four-car pileup which took several minutes and several wreckers to clean up. Fortunately, everyone either walked away or went back to the pits in his own car. Since it was raining in Iowa, perennial national IMCA Stock Car contender Mike Nichols decided to come west to find a place to race. After winning his heat race and pocketing some extra gas money from the cash dash, Nichols started the Stock Car A Feature in row four. Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood took the lead from Wallace’s Brandon Clough on lap two, but lost the lead after the second of four caution periods. The top four cars went into corner two nearly four wide, with Nichols going as high as anyone and managing to come out of the corner with the lead. After the Iowa driver took the lead, he was uncontested en route to a sweep of Stock car events. The battle for second remained a crowd pleaser. Charley Brown drove many laps holding the spot from Jason Smidt of Minden, heat winner Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, and Colton Osborn of Cozad, who came from the back after making a pit stop. With one lap to go, Smidt was able to finally work his way by Brown to take the spot. Werkmeister was followed by Osborn, who was followed by heat winner Mikey Dancer of North Platte. The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature was slowed by only one caution, that after Corey Cruzan of Maxwell spun in corner two and was hit on the left side hard by Tyler Andreasen of Grand Island. Fortunately, neither driver were in need of medical attention, but the cars needed attention before being loaded on the trailers. Heat race winner Dillon Thompson of Campbell took the lead after the caution from Eric Steinmark of Kearney on the restart. He paced the rest of the way out front. However, during technical inspection, his carburetor failed testing, and he was disqualified. Jeromy Wagner, who started in the fifth row and got by heat winner Kyle Bond of Gibbon for second spot with a few laps remaining, was awarded the win. Bond was moved into second place, followed by heat winner Cody Blessing of Kearney, Steinmark, and Tim Miller of Grand Island. Seth Hagan of Kearney was the IMCA Hobby Stock B Feature winner. The next night of racing for Dawson County Raceway will be Sunday night, May 3. The United Rebel Sprint Series will come into town and join the three regular classes for a big night of racing. The gates will open at 5 PM, and the races will start at 6:30 PM. Admission will be $12 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12, and free for children under 6. Pit passes will be $25.
