NORTH PLATTE, NE (May 9) - Brooks and Dunn had a song entitled “She Gets Crazy On A Full Moon”, and at Lincoln County Raceway on May 9, the full moon was pulling full force on the 3/8-mile track on opening night. Charley Brown of Maxwell, Mikey Dancer of North Platte, Austin Davis of Benkelman, and Austin Farley of Brighton, Colo. pulled the fields to the finish line for the four A Feature victories of the night. After taking a couple of cracks at getting started, the IMCA Modified A Feature began, with North Platte’s Andrew Dillenburg showing the way. After a caution period on lap six, Dillenburg had a bad start on a restart, handing the lead over to heat winner Charley Brown. With a handful of laps to go, heat winner Robbie Haines made a charge at the lead, and was able to get alongside Brown at one point. After the leaders took the white flag, a car spun off of the backstretch, bringing out the caution. The race was called at that point, giving Brown the win. Haines was credited with second place, followed by John Huffman of McCook and Jeremy Herbst of North Platte. The original fifth place finisher weighed 35 pounds light on the scale, allowing Steve Aitken of Cozad to pick up the fifth place points. Rookie driver Cale Osborn of Cozad took the lead in the IMCA Stock Car A Feature from Shane Stout, North Platte, on lap four. He lost the lead to Mikey Dancer on lap six, but came back to take the lead the following lap. Dancer was able to dance on by a couple of laps later, and Osborn eventually faded. Charley Brown drew the fifth row for the event, and started applying the pressure for the lead before the first caution on lap fourteen. Three more cautions slowed the finish, but Dancer was able to deny Brown from having two feature wins in the night. Colton Osborn of Cozad was the third place finisher, meaning the three heat racers swept the top three spots. Zach Schultz of North Platte finished in fourth place. Jeff Whiting of Gothenburg won the B Feature (which was slowed by the second time the lights in corners three and four went out), and finished in fifth place in the main event. The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature also had some issues on getting the first lap completed. Once the field was able to find the way around the track, heat race winner Cory Allen of Cozad was the man showing the way. A restart on lap six took out top five racers Jim Buss of Blue Hill and Corey Cruzan of Maxwell after they made contact on the Delaware restart. Austin Davis was biding his time from row five, and during the long green flag period, worked his way by Allen to earn his first feature victory of the year. Ron Edge of Amherst, Colo. got by the Cozad driver with one lap to go to finish in second place. Heat winner Derek Thiem of Columbus and Richard Boon of Benkelman rounded out the top five. Allen Wissmann of Bertrand took the win in the B Feature. The Mini-Sprint drivers were given the task of showing up or risk losing the right to run on the ¼-mile track on a regular basis. They responded with 20 cars from places in between Lincoln, Nebr. and Aurora, Colo., as well as some places out of that area. Brighton, Colo. driver Austin Farley was the start of the show, lapping everyone that finished ninth on back at least once. Garland driver Matt Fiala almost caught Farley while the two were going through lapped traffic. A caution on lap twelve aligned the field nose-to-tail, giving Farley open space to roam after the restart, and the blasted away for the win. Austin’s brother Andy Farley finished in a similar looking car in third place, ahead of Rob Lipker of Hastings and Grant Bolt of Rapid City, S.D. The other Mini-Sprint heats were won by Dalten Collins of Lincoln and John Webster of North Platte. After taking a week off for local graduations, Lincoln County Raceway will be back in action on May 23. The gates will open at 5 PM, and the races will start at 7 PM.
