COLUMBUS, Neb. (May 28) - A second IMCA sanctioned division is now on Thursday night programs at US 30 Speedway. Mach-1 Sport Compacts will run weekly at the 1/3-mile Columbus clay oval through Aug. 20. The class had previously been called the hornets, with rules extremely similar to the Sport Compacts. "Our rules were so close that almost all the cars were already IMCA legal," promoter Sam Ganskow said. "The only thing a couple drivers had to add was one bar in the roll cage." Designed as an entry-level class, Sport Compacts are front wheel drive, compact cars powered by three or four cylinder engines. First sanctioned in 2006, the division is on weekly cards at 16 tracks at five states. Ganskow is optimistic that car counts will go up, bolstered by regulars from Butler County Motorplex or Beatrice Speedway on Fridays, Eagle Raceway on Saturdays and I-80 Speedway on Sundays.
"If they're chasing national
points, we're the only game on Thursday night," she said. "We could get some
drivers from Iowa, too."
