NORTH PLATTE, NE (May 30) - Mother Nature was not a worry at Lincoln County Raceway on May 30, as sunny skies and warm weather made it a decent evening for racing. Second place was not a worry to Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colo., Charley Brown of Maxwell, Austin Davis of Benkelman, and Cory Kelley of North Platte, as they were the drivers to finish one spot better in the four A Features during the evening. With the long IMCA Modified A Features of the last two weeks, a thirty minute time limit was put on the night’s main event. Jim Mlady of North Platte jumped out to the lead at the start of the race and had a fast car, but four caution periods in the first eight laps kept everyone close to him. After a lap eight restart, Mlady got out of the groove, and handed the lead over to Jeremy Frenier. Continued cautions kept him from making another good run at the lead, and aided Ronnie Wallace of McCook and Charley Brown to join the fray. With three laps to go, Wallace made a serious attempt at Frenier’s lead, had to back off a bit, and let Frenier slip away with the win, his second win in two nights. After the race, Wallace’s car scaled too light, giving the second place check to Brown. Mlady was credited with third, Brandon Hagan of McCook fourth, and Jeremy Herbst of North Platte fifth place. Wallace, Herbst, and Robby Haines of Benkelman were the IMCA Modified heat race winners. By the way, the last car on the track crossed the finish line at thirty minutes, twelve seconds. The IMCA Stock Car A Feature was slowed by only one caution, and all fifteen starters finished on the lead lap. Casey Werkmeister of Maywood had the lap on the opening lap, and opened a fair lead. Charley Brown and his Stock Car worked the traffic and caught Werkmeister after the halfway point of the race. Brown took the lead on lap fourteen, but his work was far from over. Werkmeister stayed beside him for over a lap, nearly leading lap fifteen. Brown finally was able to clear Werkmeister to run the line he needed to pull out to a healthy lead at the finish line. Mikey Dancer rounded out the top five with fellow North Platte racers Travis Tilford and Todd Chrisman. Brown, Dancer, and Colton Osborn of Cozad were the three heat race winners. Shane Stout of North Platte was the victor in the IMCA Stock Car B Feature. The IMCA Hobby Stocks had their share of trouble getting going, and when they did, they were led by heat winner Leland Stute of Benkelman. Dan Morash of North Platte let it be known he had a fast car and got by Stute to lead lap three. Morash’s car was a little too loose, and he let the Benkelman driver get back by on the next lap. Austin Davis, another Benkelman driver and heat race winner, was waiting in the weeds and bided his time to work through the field from his fifth row starting spot. Coming around to take the white flag, Davis found a way by Stute and came back around to the finish line in first place. Corey Cruzan of Maxwell finished behind them, followed by Morash and Greg Hoing of Johnson Lake. Heat race winner Cory Kelley got the jump on the field at the start of the Mini-Sprint A Feature and never looked back. He built a corner lead on Jeff Wignall of Alliance during the twelve lap, caution-free event. Arden Myers of McCook battled a pesky Mandee Sundquist of Loomis for the third spot, taking the position at the end. Bryce Easton of North Platte rounded out the top five. Lincoln County Raceway will be back in action on Saturday night, June 6. The gates open at 5 PM, and the races will start at 7 PM.
