LEXINGTON, NE (June 7) - Despite the damp weather all day, Dawson County Raceway was able to get the complete show in on June 7, which included the United Rebel Sprint Series along with the regular classes. The weather actually made for a great, fast track for the evening. Jon Johnson of Utica, Kan., David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan., Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, and Ethan Johnson of Broken Bow were great and fast, winning the night’s A Feature. The URSS 305 Sprint Cars came in a little wounded from races earlier in the weekend, and lost another three before the A Feature with motor and other issues. The remaining drivers, however, patched things together to put on a twenty lap, caution-free feature. Randy Bantam of Norton, Kan. jumped to the lead at the start of the race with his sights on a victory. That was until Ransom, Kan. driver Reed Bernbeck began reeling him in using a low line. The eighteen second laps he was running was somewhat slower than the 16.37 second laps and 16.71 laps run by heat race winners C. J. Johnson of Quinter, Kan. and Jeff Radcliffe of Hill City, Kan., but they were fast enough to sneak himself by Bantam on lap eleven. Bernbeck set his sights on his first ever A Feature win, but when he came up on the crippled car of Edison’s Bill Hays (who was able to piece his car together for the feature after rolling in his heat and catching on fire), he let up a little bit. He could have used a “Kansas Tornado” warning, as Jon Johnson used this moment as the opportunity to catch Berbeck, take the lead with three laps to go, and went on to win his 20th career URSS A Feature win. Bernbeck did hold on for a respectable second place. Jeff Radcliffe stayed ahead of C. J. Johnson to take third place. Bantam held on for a fifth place finish. For the first time in a long time, the IMCA Modifieds ran a race without massive carnage. Of the twenty drivers, nineteen finished the race, and the other drove off on his own power. The battle for the lead early in the race was between Brooke Eilts of Grand Island and James Moore of Gibbon, who each took a turn at the front spot. Vince Leibert of Lexington got by both of them on lap four and set sail. A caution on lap seven bunched the field up and placed heat winner David Murray on his tail. Murray was able to use the low line to get by Leibert on the tenth lap and never looked back. On the last corner of the last lap, Chad Dolan of Gibbon was able to sneak underneath Leibert for the second spot. Scott Blessing of Kearney finished in fourth place, and Jeremy Herbst rounded out a top five sweep for the BMS racing chassis. The other heats were won by Charley Brown of Maxwell and Chuck Stryker of Eddyville. For the second week in a row, the IMCA Stock Car A Feature had a massive pileup, this time on the opening lap, that took out five cars. The remaining drivers settled down, with heat winner Jason Koch of Cambridge showing the way. He was hounded by Charley Brown, who was hounded by heat winner Mike Nichols. At about lap ten, a group of caution periods got everyone out of rhythm. After a lap thirteen restart, Nichols was able to find a way to get above and around Koch and went on for his third feature win in as many races this year in Lexington. Charley Brown followed Nichols during the pass and finished ahead of Koch as well. Jason Smidt of Minden got by heat race winner Mikey Dancer of North Platte to earn the fourth place spot. Ethan Johnson is going to North Carolina for some race car technical education classes, so he had to make his last night of racing for a while count. On lap three of the IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature, he took the lead from Frank Mladek of Cozad. However, heat winner Cody Blessing of Kearney also had something to race for, as it was his seventeenth birthday, and he quickly got himself to second place. The two high school students showed the rest of the eighteen-car field the way for the remaining laps. A caution with two laps to go set up one attempt at a green-white-checkered finish. After the field came to take the green, cars immediately bunched up in the middle of the field, resulting in the end of the race, with the results as the cars finished lap thirteen. Johnson never gave up the lead and was awarded the win, with Blessing taking second place. Eric Steinmark of Kearney finished in third place, while Mladek held on for fourth. Jim Rayburn of Gibbon finished in fifth place. Rayburn and Jim Buss of Blue Hill were the other two heat race winners. Rookie Tyler Andreasen of Grand Island won the B Feature. Dawson County Raceway will be back in action on Sunday, June 14. On that night, the SportMods are set to make an appearance, along with the three regular classes. The races will start at 6:30 PM, Central Time.
