LEXINGTON, Nebr. (June 14) - The weather again made it questionable whether the races at Dawson County Raceway would get in, and again it held out, leaving the drivers a fast, tacky track for the night. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan., Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, Jim Buss of Blue Hill, and Bryan Herrick of Curtis used it all to their advantages and took the A Feature wins on June 14. After troubles in his heat race, David Murray started the IMCA Modified A Feature in twentieth position. An opening lap caution allowed him to restart one row better, but still was able to take the lead from Josh Sabin of North Platte on lap six. While many drivers would occasionally get into the marbles in corner four and slip back, Murray had no problems en route to his third win of the weekend. Second place was not the position to be, as Vince Leibert of Lexington, a heat race victor broke while running there on lap three. Newcomer Cole Hodges of Ogallala started back in row six and was able to get himself to the spot with a handful of laps left, only to loop in corner four. That last caution moved Chad Dolan of Gibbon into a position to challenge Murray, but he had to settle for second place. Heat race winner Travis Mack of Grand Island stayed in the top three the entire race, and finished in third. Jay Steffens of North Platte, the other heat race winner finished in fourth, while a late charge by Kearney’s Bo Egge moved him into fifth spot. After two consecutive race nights with multi-car pileups, the IMCA Stock Cars showed they could run a twenty lap A Feature without a caution. Heat race winners Casey Werkmeister of Maywood and Shane Stout of North Platte started on the front row, and battled much like they did in the cash dash, which was won by the Maywood driver. Werkmeister showed the way for the first nine laps, finally seceding to Stout on lap ten. Their battle allowed Mike Nichols to gain on both of them. After getting by Werkmeister, Nichols did his own work on Stout, getting by with five laps to go, and making his A Feature record at Dawson County Raceway perfect for the season so far. Stout held on for second place. Jason Koch of Cambridge was able to get himself a respectable third place finish. Brendan Eilts of Grand Island had to feel good about his fourth place finish, getting by Werkmeister late for the spot. The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature was more like a war of attrition than a race, as only eight of the original eighteen starters were able to finish the race. Zach Canas of Cozad took the early lead and stayed ahead of the madness for the early part of the race. A multi-car accident on lap one tore up a lot of cars and left many cars with loose parts, as the two debris cautions during the race help attest to that fact. On lap seven, Tyler Andreasen of Grand Island found his way by Canas and pointed his car toward his first A Feature win. It was not to be, as Jim Buss got by him on lap ten, and then his motor blew up three laps later, setting up a two lap shootout to decide the win between Buss, fellow heat winner Dillon Thompson of Campbell, and Jim Rayburn of Gibbon. Buss could not be denied of the win by Thompson, Rayburn, or any of the other remaining cars. Tim Miller of Grand Island came from the B Feature, which was won by Jeromy Wagner of Kensington, Kan., to finish fourth in the main event. Terry Eatherton of Gibbon finished in fifth place. Cody Blessing of Kearney was the third IMCA Hobby Stock heat race winner. Four SportMods came for their first ever event at Dawson County Raceway. Bryan Herrick of Curtis showed the way in both the heat race and A Feature. Most of the battling in the feature was done by Jimmy Weigel of Oberlin, Kan. and Max Pollmann of Trenton, as they went back and forth for second for many laps. When they both tangled, McCook’s Mark Kinne realigned in front of both of them with three laps to go and stayed ahead of them for second place. Weigel was able to stay ahead of Pollmann for third. Weather permitting, Dawson County Raceway will be back in action on Sunday night, June 21. That night will be a Burger King Nine for Nine Challenge Series night for the IMCA Hobby Stocks. The gates open at 5 PM, and the races will start at 6:30 PM.
