LEXINGTON, Nebr. (June 21) - While many dads had a peaceful Father’s Day during the day, everyone had a wild night June 21 at Dawson County Raceway. The three IMCA classes averaged 23 cars per class, and they showed the fans everything from speed to altitude. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan., Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, and Kyle Bond of Gibbon had the fast cars, as they won the night’s A Feature races. The IMCA Hobby Stock class had three different rollovers during the night. In one of the heat races, rookie Christian McCance of Lexington got his car sideways and rolled down the backstretch. In the A Feature, Grand Island driver Dan Pittman rolled his car off of corner one while running in third place. But both flips failed in comparison to the accident by Greg Hoing of Johnson Lake in the B Feature. Hoing, who brought out a car he purchased from Iowa, lost control in corner four near the end of the race. His car went into a slide and rolled, crashed through the retaining fence, and landed on the grandstand side of the wall. It took about a half hour to get the car back over the fence and for the track crew to perform a makeshift fix to the fence. Fortunately, all of the drivers walked away from these accidents. Kyle Bond has had several IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature wins in the past few years, but since switching to a Plymouth Duster this year, had not found victory. Bond started on the front row of the night’s main event and took off with the lead, closely followed by Cody Blessing of Kearney. After Pittman’s roll on lap nine, the field was grouped up for one final restart. Heat race winners Tim Miller of Grand Island and Jim Buss of Blue Hill were able to get by Blessing on the restart, but could not prevent heat winner Bond from “dusting” the field. Blessing was the fourth place finisher, with Jeremy Wagner of Kensington, Kan. finishing in fifth place. Sixth place Eric Steinmark of Kearney was the other heat race winner. Leland Stute of Benkelman, who showed up to run the fifth leg of the Burger King Nine for Nine Challenge Series took the B Feature win. Dillon Thompson of Campbell won the cash dash. Zach Schultz of North Platte had a bead on breaking Mike Nichols’ winning streak in the IMCA Stock Car division, as he jumped out to a big lead in that division’s main race. He and Shane Stout of North Platte were able to get out to a big lead over Nichols when he became embroiled in a three car race for third place with brothers Cale and Colton Osborn of Cozad. After Nichols established third place, the caution came out for the stalled car of newcomer Brendon Stigge of Fairbury. On the restart, Nichols got by Stout and made the pass on Schultz, only to slide up the track and give the heat race winner back the lead. With two laps to go, Nichols finally got by and held on for his fifth win in five races at Dawson County Raceway. Stout also got by Schultz for the second position in the last two laps. Charley Brown of Maxwell finished in fourth place, while Jason Smidt of Minden made lemonade out of his lemon of a start to earn fifth place. Cale Osborn and Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood took the other two Stock Car heat race wins. On the second lap of the IMCA Modified A Feature, the drivers went four wide across the line for second place. Unfortunately for the scorekeepers, two cars near the middle of the field spun in corner one, forcing them to compare their notes. By the fifth lap, David Murray found his way by Bo Egge of Kearney for the lead. He had a big lead when the race bogged down with five laps to go. Four caution periods between laps fifteen and seventeen had people wondering if the race would ever end. The fifth time was a charm, and Murray was able to take his fourth win in a row at Dawson County Raceway. Vince Leibert of Lexington was able to win the battle for second place. Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colo. made his first trip to Lexington this year count with a third place finish. John Huffman of McCook finished in fourth place after starting in the ninth row. Kyle Clough of Wallace finished in fifth place. Murray was also a heat race winner, and so were Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg, Chad Dolan of Gibbon, and Jim Mlady of North Platte. Jeremy Herbst of North Platte was the B Feature winner. Dawson County Raceway is not scheduled to race next week, which will give racers time to fix their cars, fans time to rest, and promoter Allen Wissmann time to fix what was damaged around the track. Racing will resume on Sunday night, July 5, at 6:30 PM, Central Time.
