NORTH PLATTE, NE. (June 27) - When the A Features rolled out at Lincoln County Raceway on June 27, it seemed as though each feature tried to top the previous feature in the ending. The final four races of the night had the crowd excited and on the edge of their seats. Jeremy Herbst and Andrew Dillenburg of North Platte, Litton Stute of Benkelman, and Charley Brown of Maxwell finished off the competitors in the four A Features each won. The first main event was the Mini-Sprint A Feature. Heat race winner Bob DeRouchey of Fort Collins, Colo. took the lead at the start of the event and had hopes of ending his streak of races where he did not finish. The car gave up the ghost three laps in, handing the lead over to Shane Sundquist of Loomis. Jeremy Herbst, who started back in the fourth row, found a way by Sundquist and took the lead on the following lap. Josh Lipker of Cozad would catch Herbst and get by when the two were in traffic on lap eight, but his car would also give out on the next lap. Herbst regained the lead and never gave it up again. Shane Sundquist finished in second place, ahead of his sister Mandee Sundquist. Arden Myers of McCook took the fourth spot. Bryce Easton of North Platte rounded out the top five. The IMCA Modified A Feature rolled out next. North Platte racers Mike Saathoff and Josh Sabin battled for the lead early in the event, with Sabin getting by on lap five. A spin by him and a trip to the pits for Saathoff put Charley Brown at the helm. Brown was still leading after the race bogged down with a caution and two bad starts on lap then, but when it was finally time to go, his motor blew. Jay Steffens of North Platte took the lead and tried to run away and hide. Andrew Dillenburg, who started in row seven, began to reel in Steffens and second place runner Kyle Clough of Wallace near the end of the race. He got by Clough, then had a break after the caution flew after lap eighteen. On the restart, Dillenburg stayed right with Steffens, then used the high line in corners three and four to snag the lead. He stayed out front on the next lap for his first win of the year. Clough also got by Steffens for second place. Heat race winner John Huffman of McCook finished in fourth place. Zach Hilzer of Fort Morgan, Colo. finished in fifth place in spite of starting eighteenth and running gears different than what he started the night with after those gears fell out in hot laps. Jim Mlady of North Platte and Brown were the other two heat race winners. Litton Stute had his sights set on his first ever IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature win from his pole position. He had the lead at the start of the event, but lost it to his father Leland on lap three. The caution came out a few laps later after Austin Davis of Benkelman spun on the front straight. At that time, Leland went into the pits to fix a flat tire, handing the lead back to Litton. Michael Woodhead of Holyoke, Colo. inherited second place and tried to work the younger Stute, but he was having some fuel pump issues. That didn’t matter to Litton, who was smiling big when he had the lead at the white flag and smiling bigger as he crossed the finish line in first place. Leland Stute came back to finish in third place, ahead of Corey Cruzan of Maxwell and Ron Edge of Amherst, Colo. Litton was also the heat winner of the night. The night ended with at 25-lap IMCA Stock Car A Feature. Heat winner Brandon Clough of Wallace took the lead on lap two from Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood. On that same lap, the caution flew for a car that had spun on the front stretch. As the cars were slowing down, the car of Jeff Whiting of Gothenburg drifted high into corner three. He tried to correct his steering, but the car slid off of the track sideways and rolled. Whiting was able to get out of the car on his own power. Clough continued to lead after racing resumed, but followed a common theme of the night of leading, then dropping out with mechanical issues. Casey Werkmeister of Maywood took over the lead on lap seven. Despite a bent front hood, Werkmeister was fast. Two other fast cars included Colton Osborn of Cozad and Charley Brown, who started in the last row after he went into the pits on the parade lap to have his crew find one of his spark plug wires came loose. In the last five laps, Osborn first took a shot at taking the lead, only to have Werkmeister hold him off. Brown was able to sneak by Osborn and took his shot. With one lap to go, Charley’s move was successful, and was able to come away with the win. Werkmeister and Osborn were followed at the finish line by heat winner Mikey Dancer of North Platte and Cale Osborn of Cozad. The other IMCA Stock Car heat was won by Travis Tilford of North Platte. Lincoln County Raceway will be back in action on Saturday night, July 11. The gates will open at 5 PM, and the races will start at 7 PM.
